Reason for slow start?

Tommy Chong

Player Valuation: £70m
With all this pre-season talk of 'this is going to be Everton's season',
'we finally got a full squad' and 'We need to get a good start to the season' etc...
Do you think the pressure got to Moyes and the players?
That being the reason for some of Moyes strange tactical decisions,
and inability to score?

The pressure caught up to us and we choked...
What do you fella's think?

In Moyes's press conference ahead of today's visit of United he says he's at a loss at how to change pre-season preparations for us to get off to a better start. The problem is glaringly obvious. For the last few years we've tended to play against low-ranking teams from Australia, America, Scandinavia and Ireland whereas the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and City are playing in prestige round robin tournaments against elite sides like Ajax and Inter.

We tend to have one high-profile match during the close season (this time it was Wolfsburg), in which we invariably struggle. Moyes may take the view that 'it's all about fitness' or that 'we were without our World Cup players', but that's the same for every other club. Our players are simply under-challenged by playing against the likes of Norwich, Preston and Everton Chile.

If we're not glamourous enough for an invitation to the Ajax Cup or whatever, why don't we start our own? It works for Arsenal. I'm sure we could get some Champions Leagues opponents; it would be a money-spinner; and it would be good for morale. The Emirates Cup is held over a weekend. This year it featured Lyon, Celtic and Milan. We could have it on the bank holiday weekend at the start of August. Three games in three days would be too much for the senior squad, so we could agree with the other clubs that the opening day is for reserves and youth players.
