Has Butland done anything to merit costing the same as him?

No not at all. I don't think I worded my comment properly. I was meaning to direct it more towards the overall Begovic Love thread this has turned into not simply Butland or Begovic. I just worry that he's been aided by a really strong defensive team and when left out on an island behind a more attack minded team he may not hold up.

Perfectly reasonable concern mert. It's always a risk I suppose and I'd also like to have a young keeper, but the good ones are ridiculously expensive. There's a couple of keepers currently in reserve at City and Arsenal I'd take off their hands for cheap.

I agree. Definitely need to be thinking about the future at GK as well as winger. Just have that sinking feeling there will be nothing in January and very little in the summer as far as spending. From my earlier point if I had my choice from the reasonably priced young GK bin it would be Zieler from Hannover. Supposedly 7 million release clause. The other youngsters though Leno/Horn etc are probably for sure out of the price range. For all I know 7 mill my be as well.

So self assured you mate. I think keeper will need to be addressed but we will need to do that delicately when the time comes. He's a big flag bearer for us and he's been here a long time so you'd like to do right by him.
I think a keeper more in his prime is a safer bet. Eliminate the gamble potential brings and keepers in their prime aren't actually that expensive.

Definitely don't mean to come off like I know it all cause that's certainly not the case. Just hoping that when the time comes to move on from Howard that it's someone with a upside not a 28-32 year old "solid" but not great type. A player that can grow with the likes of Barkley, Stones, Besic, Lukaku etc..

Begovic does ok for Bosnia tbf. I understand what you're saying but he's only 27/28, he's still young in keeping terms and he's a very good goalie. For me, would be an ideal replacement for Howard in the next year or two.

If we're to assume, and I'm sure some will disagree, that our strongest XI is:

Howard
Coleman Jagielka Stones Baines
Barry McCarthy
Mirallas Barkley Pienaar
Lukaku

Then it's really a matter of depth. Left wing would be priority for me, followed by keeper, followed by centre back. If we were to bring in say, Perisic or Milner on a free and Begovic, they would slot straight into the team. Then a centre back, who would immediately become third choice/challenge for a starting spot, say Reid on a free. Then I'd be looking to shore up centre mid. Delph would be my number one target and his contract expires very soon.

Begovic £12m???
Reid - Free
Delph - Free
Milner - Free

Obviously free doesn't mean free, but its better than paying a fee. Would not only improve the first team but add some real quality depth. Not sexy foreign names, but people should have learned by now (Barry/McCarthy) that they don't need to be.

Anybody seen anything of the Man United 18 year old Andreas Pereira?

Highly rated midfielder whose contract runs out at the end of the year. Although it is a long shot wondered if he could be heading into another Pogba situation where he wants more playing time but nervous that he won't get it as his club will just buy experienced footballers.

pienaar is the obvious weak link there imo

Would love Firmino. Not sure what he would cost but i reckon he would be another Tadic situation, would just take to the Premier League fantastically.

Yeah, a Firmino or Perisic to replace Pienaar and we'd have the most amazing outfield first team to build on.
