Lads and the occasional lady,
Last year, I was tipping the scales at somewhere over 14 stone. I am not very tall and battling through middle-age like a good-un. I was carrying around 30% body fat. We are talking something like an extra 4 inches around the waist. I didn't look massive, but it was just well hidden! Thing is, only ten years earlier I was steady at 11 stone and fit as a flea, had been for years. So there must be an element of not adjusting life style to age. Mainly, due to sports injuries I became quite inactive...for far too long. Back in the day, I used to cycle every where. I never learned to drive until I was 26 as I worked local. Then my job moved from just outside Manchester, to getting close to Leeds and I learned to drive.
In the last few years, you might read or personally experience anxiety, mental health issues, depression etc. If not yourself, somebody you know. I started developing migraine about 2 years ago and became a regular victim to it. Ended up on medication. I blamed the job of course. The thing is, I only ever got migraine on my days off. Worrying about work. So eventually enough was enough.
The mountain bike came out of the shed and out of retirement. Got it cleaned up and serviced. Invested in decent cycling gear, the most important thing of all - a damn good cycle helmet.
Through September and October I eased myself back into cycling and it has changed my life.
For the better lads, for the better.
Had a break due to the winter, but been got back into it in March.
I have been off the migraine meds for months. I have never felt so relaxed with myself and life. I do not worry about work when I am not there. I have lost nearly 2 stone by simply cutting out junk food and exercising.
It hasn't happened over night. I am now down to 12 stone and never been so positive in my outlook on life for a long time.
Thing is, the cycling. Have you ever considered how frackin' beautiful this country is? You can do these trips into the hills and never take it all in if in a car. I am on my bike and just soaking it all up. It is a way of destressing, forgetting your anxieties, solving your problems while riding. Having clarity.
I go for these rides and just stop. I take photos, take it all in.
It doesn't matter what you starting point is. Start gently. Build it up. Make the time to do it rather than be engrossed with gaming or the internet.
I do not measure distance. I do what I can. So my rides are measured in hours, not mileage. Lots of hills and all that.
It is the best thing I could have done. If you are still in your 20's then this might not be relevant, be it will be one day. If you read this far, well done!
My ambition is to be as skinny and healthy as @Bruce Wayne
Anyway, just saying. Some pics to follow...
