Huyton Layne

Player Valuation: £70m
A Manchester United fan who hurled racist abuse at a black player was today fined £200 and banned from football matches for three years.

Howard Hobson, 57, shouted numerous racial slurs and made monkey noises at Stoke City's Trinidad-born player Kenwyne Jones.

Hobson was in the North Stand at Old Trafford for the game against Stoke on January 31, Trafford Magistrates Court heard.

The defendant was asked to explain his actions by JPs after pleading guilty to a single charge of a racially aggravated public order offence.

"I'm not racist," he told the bench. "I have coloured people in my family and most of my best mates are coloured. I don't know what came over me. I'm deeply sorry."

Eileen Rogers, prosecuting, told the court Hobson's behaviour was brought to the attention of club stewards at the match by a witness sitting near the defendant. After the half-time interval when Hobson returned to his seat he was spoken to by stewards and taken away and then transferred to a police station in Salford.

Hobson, of Weaver Walk, Openshaw, Manchester, admitted making some comments about the Stoke player "in the heat of the moment" and accepted he used the words, "black [Poor language removed]". He said he could not remember using the words "w**" or "monkey" but accepted what the witness had reported him as saying.

Hobson was fined £200 and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £85 court costs. The football banning order means he is not allowed to enter a football ground in England and Wales for three years or he could be arrested and he must surrender his passport when England play internationals abroad.

Greater Manchester Police said Hobson's ban would give him time to think about his "disgusting outbursts" and send a "clear message" against racism at football grounds.

Stretford-based Superintendent Jim Liggett said: "Hobson's racist tirade was a shocking reminder that there remain a tiny minority of football supporters who still think it is acceptable to abuse players just because of the colour of their skin. I am grateful to the genuine football supporter who heard Hobson's abuse and quickly brought it to the attention of the stewards. It is fans like this who are the true supporters of the game, not people like Hobson."

Absolute lolz at pleading your innocence with such a wonderfully racist statement.

This is the difference our own fans shopped the **** it didnt take CCTV etc to get him unlike the vermin

He should be banned for life by the way

But that brings up a point, surely it's all hearsay and should be thrown out. It's not like all fans from the same team like each other, I sat in the paddock next to my best mate and he nearly came to blows with some old fella that wouldn't stop hurling abuse at Unsworth, alls it would have took is me and him to say he'd said racist stuff about someone and get him banned

"I don't know what came over me". That is f*cking infuriating. He knew exactly what he was doing and he'd do it again if he hadn't been caught. Lying [Poor language removed].

Spot on. The hysteria is getting ridiculosu. Although with this case it seems pretty conclusive what he was doing. I think with this there must have been several witnesses. I really hope people arn't getting done because 1 or 2 people saying so. That's not how the law works for most other offenses.

It's not heresay, he admitted it ffs. Life ban. Basically condoning it by saying otherwise.

Yeah this sounds like its a clear case. The guy admitted it in court by saying ' I don't know what came over me'.

Lifetime ban though? Really? Let's not go OTT. If he's had previous then yes absolutely. But 3 years is plenty of time to reflect on his behaviour and learn not to do so in the future. I'd have him on awareness courses aswell.

Damn Nik, that sounds all mature and reasonable, you feeling ok pal? :P

Yea a lifetime ban is possibly harsh but sometimes with these things making someone a scapegoat instead of a slap on the wrist scares off more people doing it. Not fair on the original guy for sure, but someone has to take the blame for society!

I don't know what came over me mate.

I dunno man, if you start handing out lifetime bans for that it sets a dangerous precendent. If it was a lifetime for him it would have to be a lifetime for all. I mean say he's 30 now would you still have him banned aged 60? Not even most murderers get a lifetime ban from society. 3 years is a decent amount of 'reflection' time for verbal abuse. I think he'd have changed his ways by then. And lets not forget this is verbal abuse, not physical. Sticks and stones and all that. Obviously wrong but let's not go overboard. Take the 3 year ban on the chin son, don't do it again.

Well, I'm also of the opinion that life should mean life for jail sentences, but that's a whole new debate best left alone.

You do find though that someone, usually after a string of similar incidences, plays the fall guy in all sorts of crimes.

Maybe it's just me, but Kenwynne Jones isn't the sort of player to wind anyone up. He seems to get about his job in a reasonably sporting manner.
