Racism

Pretty much. And you seriously need to rethink that "but the world's not like that" boll*cks. You have to be the change you want to see in the world. Racism is an oppressive societal force acting against a certain part of the population. The abuse of Balotelli wasn't racism itself but an act of racism - a visible manifestation of a largely invisible phenomenon which is nonetheless always there. When it does become visible (i.e. when an act of racism is perpetrated) it has to be challenged. It is the only way.

I'm with Giraffe.

And someone said do gay people start complaining. Erm, gay rights movements the world over? Fat people are increasingly a discriminated group and forming 'fat rights' advocacy groups. Abuse is one thing, but there are different dimensions to abuse (i.e.individuals taking the piss out of you for having big ears) to being part of a systematic broader level of opression within a society.

I see. Sepp Blatter is a (allegedly) corrupt, wealthy man that usually gets his own way. I'm not and I hope I don't think like him.

I meant the whole, "Shake hands and everything is okay" idea. He basically said racist remarks on a pitch is okay as long as everyone shakes hands at the final whistle. It caused outrage in the media as you probably know.

Saying that people should be emotionally tougher is a bit off.

Thats why I was saying, would you rephrase your original post in a better way? Coz reading it as it appears makes it sound like you're fed up of people complaining they are being racially abused. That don't look good for you. Or NIK.

Meh not arsed. I've said that it shouldn't be tolerated and dealt with but imo people go over the top about it. If people think it doesn't look good they can look back at my posts. I have a different approach to it. I'm anti hysteria. Pro getting **** done. I'm not gonna do the 'I have mates' thing coz you won't believe me even though I live in one of the most ethnically diverse places in the country whatevs, so let's just I say I know people who would literally laugh in the face of someone moronic enough to say something like 'you black [Poor language removed]'. Just like I've laughed when black people have said the same thing in reverse at 5aside.

See your point Hibbo, but is "being part of a systematic broader level of opression within a society" that deep in sport. What races are being held back? Could the likes of Ballotelli not wear a undershirt saying "Hey I'm better than you and get paid more in one year than you could ever dream of" then flash it at his taunters. How quick would they shut the fluk up?

I know what you're trying to say and I agree. Racism IS being addressed properly? Do we get whole sections of a crowd chanting? NO. Do we have the odd person shouting something? YES. Do they get punished? YES. There is ALWAYS going to be 1 idiot wherever you go. That's not just to do with racism. That's anything. Do gay people burst out into tears if 1 person makes a homophobic comment about them? No. Would there even be much punishment for a comment like that? I don't think we'd be talking about jailtime (a la John Terry) that's for sure. I think we are going WAY over the top with it. This kind of language shouldn't be accepted but with regards to how offensive it is? Well... 'You black [Poor language removed]'. Is it really that offensive? I know in reverse I'd just laugh about it. It should be punished accordingly of course. But would I burst into tears if 1 idiot called me a 'black [Poor language removed]'? No. People DO need to grow thicker skin and laugh at idiots for what they are.

This is one of the most idiotic things I've ever read on here. It's not just about offence, Nik (and by the way, I'll let the victim be the judge of that if you don't mind), it's about effect; about economic and political repression. I'll ask again, as I've asked before on here: Why do black people earn less money than white people on average in this country? Is it because they're less intelligent? The black kids in my class seem just as intelligent and the white and asian ones. The brightest kid in the school is is Congolese (really, he's practically a genius).

Or could it be something else holding these people back? Hmmmm...... what could it be, I wonder.....?

I agree up to a point with Bladder that winding up people on the pitch is a part of gamesmanship and with Nik that the exact phrase used towards Balotelli doesn't seem any more racist than calling Bibliotelli an Italian [Poor language removed] or a spaghetti eating one.
But with pc stuff it's about if someone feels that he's been racially abused / is offended by it then intended or not it is racism.
It might not always be easy to predict and with people from different cultures / language background there will be differing interpretations on expressions, so the careful route is the best one and when these things go public it's everyones responsibility to set an good example for the kids to follow.

Then he becomes an uppity little n*gger in the eyes of the hate-peddlers. Why should individual victims have to deal with this? Do we expect raped women just to put it down to experience and advise them to tell the perpetrator he was "sh*t at it"?

Surely, we as a society need to stand up to be counted. It's not like it's hard to call every act of racism into question. I vehemently disagree with Nik's attitude that too much is made of it. Clearly, not enough is made of it.

Have some self-respect, people.

I'm staggered at the stupidity of this post it's hard to know where to start but if this is the current view of the "man on the street" then this country is in big trouble we'll have regressed 40 years

Whatever dude. I have different opinions to you. And opinions are what makes the world go round so I respect yours. With regards to black peolpe potentially having less oppertunity I really don't think that's the case anymore. It just happens that a lot of black people come from poorer families. I wouldn't say they have any less oppertunities than the poorer white people that live in council estates. I really don't think colour is an issue anymore. Maybe its because I've grown up with people from all different backgrounds. I literally don't see it as even a tiny bit of an issue. It doesn't even come into my head. I think something that's offensive for one race should be offensive as another. Kicking off about someone being racist to black people and not about anyother race (chinese being a popular one) isn't equality is it? I don't think any levels of racism should be 'just accepted' but I do think there are varying degrees and sometimes the persons just gotta say 'you know what? Your an idiot mate' because I don't think its an attitude that's going to have a wide spread audience nowadays. I think unless you go to some city centre dive bar or maybe a country pub with locals you won't find a wide spread racist attitude. Like I said there will always be 1 or 2 knobheads. But you get that with everything. Just my opinion.

I think it must be. I despair, I really do.

Why despair SG? Is it because not everyone shares your opinion, or is it that not all are as literally adept as you seem to think you are. The thread has generated some interesting points, some funny and some silly. Can't be all that despairing.

Anyway, it's 10 past 10 here so I'm off to bed. Up early temorrer to lay some floor tiles and see whats goin on here.Kip in the avvo so I can stay up to watch the mighty blues give BLACKpool a whippin ha ha. Nighty Night.

The problem I have is that maybe a couple of idiots made monkey gestures, but on the whole the abuse he was getting wasn't because he was black. It was because he'd fouled their defenders a few times - Yaya Toure and Micah Richards weren't getting the same abuse.

Racism's disgraceful like but it's got to the point where you can't dislike a man for his personality if he happens to be a different skin colour.

Bingo.
