Punk Rock

Inspired a generation.

Born far too late but working with someone who still very much keeps that spirit alive. Still goes to see bands when they are touring like the damned.

That's how influential punk rock was in the UK , 50 years later

I like the fact that they showed the simplicity of songwriting - it just annoyed me that virtuoso musicians were seen as a bad thing
Before my time but mid to late 70s rock seemed less virtuosity and more masturbation as performance art. When a bloated monstrosity like Led Zep is seen as the epitome of rock n roll, never mind guitar solos but 8 minute drum solos, then something needed saying.

I'm not a fan of prog or even Led Zeppelin but I just feel that telling young people that they didn't need to be able to play their instruments wasn't a particularly positive thing

I like my musicians to be able to play - not necessarily overplay, just play.

Led Zep deffo disappeared up their backsides mid to mate 70's.

8 minutes drum solo? Try 40 minutes. And I like them! (the band, not drum solos.)

Genuine musical revolution although The Sex Pistols and the like were all posers.

Crass were the real deal. They managed to upset just about everyone. MI5 even kept a file on them.

Hindsight now tells us the Pistols were a fabrication, but at the time, they were seen as the real deal.

But without them, I doubt The Undertones, Buzzcocks, SLF etc etc would have broken through, or even tried to.

Like the New York scene was up and running before London, but unless my memory is wonky, (likely) the likes of The Ramones, the Dolls or Blondie were not really known here.

Punk rock was definitely just rebelious teens throwing some basic lyrics together and thrashing at some instruments. Obviously they had some musical talent but there is a reason the puk era was relatively short lived. Most people thought it was rubbish.

Still better than anything the Beatles did though ;-)

A money making con, a genuine musical revolution, under rated, over rated?

Did 17 year old lads from the home counties have a clue when they sung along to SLF anthems?

Google Pretty Vacant kids. Timeless.

Loved the good stuff me.
Too young for Erics...etc but have caught a lot of the old punk a few years too late, Ramones, Buzzcocks...etc but was more into the 80s bands like Discharge and Crass and caught quiet a few gigs at Planet X.
The main thing i liked from punk was the politics and social awareness that came out from it, especially the anarcho scene
