A Russian professional ice hockey team playing in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), Lokomotiv Yaroslavl -

the entire club's roster was killed in a plane crash while traveling to an away game in Minsk.[2] The airplane caught fire and crashed shortly after take-off, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from Tunoshna Airport. Preliminary reports say that 44 of the 45 passengers on board had been killed,[3] with the flight engineer as the only survivor. 26 bodies have thus been recovered

Included in the dead are believed to be some former NHL players,

Pavol Demitra, Karlis Skrastins, Josef Vasicek....

Also alot of young guys, 19, 20, 23, 24 etc.

Shocking.

RIP

I feel I should post sympathies but in the face of such a horrendous tragedy it all seems a bit futile.

RIP nonetheless.

Absolutely shocking. I'm a bad flyer and this is the reason why. Statistics be damned. Horrible way to go.

Yeah read this earlier so sad. RIP. I hate flying to for this very fear and next month i have to fly to sydney, dreading it

And sometimes I fly several times a week :( I have status on two airlines (US Air and United) and am fast to getting status on Alaska Air and AA. It isn't so bad, except when flying into Burbank when the winds change and we come in from the west, pointed at the mountains a mile away from the runway and the plane goes into a turn, while on approach, finishing the turn as the wheels touch down. Scary stuff.

RIP to the victims. It is terrible when this happens, but you are still more likely to be killed in a car crash than in a plane.

Dont worry about it mate. I can honestly say flying doesnt make me nervous in the slightest. In the very very unlikely event of a crash youre dead - simple as. Youre much more likely to be killed or injured in a car on the way to the airport, cars make me much more nervous. R.I.P. to everyone involved.

cant believe it... shocking news

I Agree.

"Though it occurred thousands of miles away from our home arenas, this tragedy represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world - including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our League," US NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.

Russian NHL star Alex Ovechkin tweeted: "I'm in shock!!!!!R.I.P ..."
