First Half

The match started in heavy rain in the former Country known as Sunny Greece. In a vast almost empty Olympic Stadium. A bright opening from Everton resulted in an opening goal on 6minutes.A long ball up, a great flick on from Cahill and Jo took it down and slid a nice ball into Bilyaletdinovs path who smashed a great left foot shot into the roof of the net from a difficult angle. A great start from the boys.

2 minutes and it was same old, same old, Gosling went down with nobody near and appeared to have injured his knee, young Jose Baxter came on in his place.

Everton where playing with Pienaar and Fellaini sitting with Cahill supporting the lone striker Jo. Who was doing some decent hold up play. Everton where having a lot of the ball, but did look shaky at the back, mainly down to a shocking pitch and Distin clearly wasnt happy. This resulted in another change after 17mins when Shane Duffy came on to make his debut.

Moyes was barking orders on the touchline and Everton where playing some nice football and a very difficult pitch, which was making players from both sides slip, fall and everybody appeared to be picking up knocks from both sides. But the Everton fans where in full voice with the game starting to go end to end and very scrappy. Both teams where only having longish shots and the half finished with Jo leading the line well and Everton fully in control.

Second Half

So the 2nd half started and it was all AEK, with Everton having the odd break forward. One of which after some nice work from Cahill, Jo showed some poor control and the chance was gone.

Then the game went back to how you would imagine on the pitch it was played, a little bit scrappy with both teams struggling to get any real decent attacks going. And poor Howard got booked for time wasting which the resulting booking and retaking of the goal kick wasted more time than anything else, stupid ref, just stupid.

Everton then started to sit a little deeper and AEK had a shot which just whizzed past the post, followed by Jo having one at the other end which was tipped round the post by the Keeper, but no corner given. That was pretty much Jo's last action as on 70minutes he went down holding his knee and it was time for the Yak Attack.

It was then backs to the wall for Everton with Yak looking very heavy footed and not holding the ball up at all. Fellaini mistimed a tackle for once and allowed AEK to break with resulted in Baxter clearing off the line. And also Hibbert making a fine clearance and also Duffy.

In a rare attack Fellaini made the Keeper work with a decent header from a corner. The rain again appeared to fall and the pitch was really heavy and the players where all starting to visibly tire. But Pienaar still had a bit left in the tank to break free on a nice run which sadly came to nothing.

Yak holding up play was really bad and he couldnt get his foot on anything and we sat very deep but stopped anything and everything that came at us. Coleman made a tackle in the box that at first glance looked like a pen to me, but replays showed he played at least some of the ball. Also in the last minute of normal time Fellaini made an outstanding tackle on the edge of the area to again stop another attack. The whistle blew and it was all over.

An excellent showing from a very young side in crappy conditions, everybody put in a real shift and it was a hard fought victory which should give the whole Club a much needed boost. I thought everybody was excellent and I thought Fellaini and Pienaar controlled the game and got some wonderful support from everybody around them.

Ratings

Howard - 7 -: Didnt look comfortable with those long shots on a very poor pitch, but did most things well.
Coleman - 8 - : Great game from the young Irish lerd.
Baines - 7.5 - : Never stopped running, did everything he was asked to do well.
Distin - 6 - : Didnt look happy, clearly injured.
Hibbert - 8 - : We all know Hibbert can defend, no surprise he played well.
Gosling - 6 - : Was playing alright untill his injury.
Billy - 8 - : Took his goal well and was always full of running and showing for the ball.
Fellaini - 9.5 - : Great game from Fellaini, made the midfield his own.
Pienaar - 9.5 - : Sat deep, went forward, ran stuff.
Cahill - 8 - : Some nice headers and sat deeper second half, tireless again.
Jo - 8.5 - : Again led the line very well, some nice hold up play and put a real shift in once more.

Duffy - 7.5 - : Good debut, looked a bit shaky, but did well.
Baxter - 7 - : Didnt really get into the game, but played alright.
Yak - 6 - : Very bad and heavy footed.

Howard - understandable to be a bit ropey, stick a surgeon into an operating theatre with assistants he doesnt know and see how he does.
Coleman - good game tonight, helped by Hibberts mashalling
Baines - left isolated in parts due to Bilys dallyings but still composed and helped the new back two.
Distin - shouldn't have played, bad risk that costs us come Sunday.
Hibbert - star performer, eleven out of ten, possibly the most hated Everton player comes through again, did not deserve a yellow and brought the two teenagers he was flanked by through the game not only unscathed but with confidence and assurance. Colossus!
Gosling - off early.
Bily - well taken goal, decision making a bit wayward, seems to need to leard to help his defender and also to share a bit of the limelight, a couple of times a bit greedy when the percentage play says "pass the bleeder".
Fellaini - average performance for him, a good performer getting back to good performances.
Cahill - a step forward on recent showings, hope his difficulties have been injury/family based and nothing more, a top pro that could be on the track to rediscovering his tenacious form.
Jo - stood up and was counted. occasionally found out of ideas but that is still natural, more of a poacher than a hold up player, will score plenty with Pienaar, Bily and Arteta contributing. Make no mistake this guy is 20 league goals a season.

Duffy - 17 - Solid and composed for his age and first full team game.
Baxter - Nice touches, easily brushed off on occasion but will grow into the game, stick three stone and some elbows on him and will be a menace.
Yak - seems to have had a reaction to either i) being away from Mrs ii) to many games too soom iii) to much training iv) games + training v) flair up of achilles vi) arsed off with the competition for striker berth and is not trying. (See former clubs)

Moyes - Changed the side early, didn't have to with Distin really, but still made the changes and kept with Jo, so credit where it is due.

Thanks MG. (y)
Appreciated lad.
Another good game from Fellaini? Spoke to some United fans today. They love him. They can keep their hands off though. I love him more. :)

For me the Fellaini/Pienaar combination in the centre showed real promise. Fellaini often manages to get a foot in on players but without someone close to him to challenge for the second ball. Pienaar's terrier like attitude meant those loose balls were either won or at least challenged for and one or other was often able to come out with possession or at least make an easy pass to retain the ball.

Despite the young lads at the back doing well I really hope next game we have Distin available to deal with Crouch, it would be a big ask of Duffy at this stage to deal with him.

We may have sniggered before but, Tony Hibbert - European legend.

Howard - 7

Coleman - 7.5
Hibbert - 8
Duffy - 7
Baines - 7.5

Baxter - 7
Fellaini - 8
Pienaar - 9
Bilyaletdinov - 7

Cahill - 7.5

Jo - 7

Tim. Howard - 8 commanding, a good presence for the youngsters.

Seamus. Coleman - 8 Excellent, tenacious defensively and comfortable in possession. Much more to come from that lad.

Tony Hibbert - 8 Excellent defensive performance, dominant in the air. Which is surprising, considering his lack of height.

Sylvain Distin - N/A Fair play to him for having a go.

Leighton Baines - 7 Solid. Up against there best player (Hersi) and kept him quiet for the majority.

Dan Gosling - N/A Another ******* injury, unlucky Dan.

Marouane Fellaini - 7 Didn't think he was brilliant by any means but it was a disiplined, mature performance from the big man.

Steven Pienaar - 9 Fantastic all round performance. Knitted things together with intelligence, chased everything down and bit at the ankles of opposition players like a Jack Russell.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov - 7 Good goal, some decent balls into the box and for the first half a neat and tidy performance. Looked knackered in the second half and was sloppy in possession. He's showing glimpses, I'm still not convinced his best position is wide left, though.

Tim Cahill - 7 Looked alot more comfortable in his natural position, still not back to his best but a good, energetic performance.

Joao Alves Jo - 8 very good performance from the Brazilian fans love to hate. Good link up play and covered alot of ground up there. He'll never be a predator but he's definitely got the tools, in my opinion, to be a very capable striker. It all comes down to consistency with him.

Subs:

Shane Duffy - 7 Started off slowly but grew into the game.

Jose Baxter - 7 gets that mark for his goal saving clearence. Didn't really do much from open play but worked hard and kept things simple.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu - N/A barely touched the ball

Chico- 9.5. Great preview again. Really seems to be a natural in the role. GOT legend.

MG- 9.5. Didn't see the match but am sure it was how he tells it.
Mikel Gee lerd's werd is gospel.* Nice one mate

*Only as far as footie is concerned
