Following on from a discussion with @Garrick in the Bowie (RIP) thread that felt a bit out of place, I ask you this question. I've had a look at a few different lists (ignored the NME one, though, what a load of nonsense) and listed the most common names as options with a couple of wildcards thrown in to account for genres other than rock.

Different people were influential to different genres. Cobain to the 90s, The Beatles to Pop, Elvis to rock etc. I'll go Bowie as he's ace though and I'm in mourning.

Aye I get that so you can never really say I suppose, that's why I lobbed Dre and Madonna in there.

It's a very subjective thing - for example, a grunge fan would say Nirvana/Pearl Jam, and wonder why the hell they weren't on this list yet Dr. Dre is.

In terms of pure reach, I'd say The Beatles, although I'm not a huge fan myself.

Of that lot, Bowie had the biggest influence on me personally.

@gonetomorrow mentioned Leadbelly above, he influenced a hell of a lot of people. There's always an origin to the origin.

Jackson inspired pop as we know it.

It's an impossible, though hopefully fun, task.
