F1, the most blatantly political sport in the world used to hand out grid penalties to teams for sporting infractions (fair enough), but it got to the point where teams would be given a 50 place grid penalty. It was rightly derided and new, more rational rules were put in place.

If the Premier League want to find themselves in a position where the whole sporting world is laughing at them for every season starting with loads of teams on minus 20 / 30 / 40 points, then they’re going the right way about it, and the F1 example would be Sunday league in comparison.
