Kevin Ratcliffe was probably the worst left back ever. Peter Reid, Adrian Heath, Trevor Steven, Graham Sharpe, all took time to settle. And we're talking in terms of years/months rather than weeks. That's half of our best team ever.

Baines and Jagielka didn't hit the floor running iirc. Lescott was getting picked ahead of Baines until injuries meant Lescott shuffled to cb. Jagielka was played at CM and RB before making centre back his own.

Fellaini was crap and a nut job when he first arrived, but when he got up to pace and learned to control his anger a bit he was top class

I think alot of people forget how good he was at times. He'd single handedly dominate games when he was in the mood.

Think Arteta was more a slow burner. Looked okay in his loan spell, so earned the move, but really showed his class thereafter.

He was. Genuinely unplayable in some games. Not just in the more advanced role he ended up in, bossed midfield at times. Felt he got a lot of undeserved flak or didn't get the recognition he deserved.

Dave Watson took a while then turned in to an absolute rock for years we would of been lost without him. I see it this way if a new player is giving all he’s got give him time to settle

I was saying this the other day. I don’t really understand why we regularly see Graveson, Arteta, Baines being brought up and looked back on fondly but never Fellaini. He’s probably the best midfielder I’ve seen play for us on his day. He was unplayable at times because of how different he was.

Got thinking about this in relation to Iwobi's recent form and attitude. It's also relevant to McNeil at the moment. It's very early days for him yet.

Anyway, what players from the past took a while before they showed their best?

My memory might let me down here, but I'm gonna say Gravesen and Carsley. I'm sure there's plenty of others.
