Something I thought about the other night which was brought up at the "pre-match g.o.t. swill" i think by a2bchris' lad.

A couple of years back the type of player we were bidding for was 2 a penny, so if we missed out on them there was someone else we could go for until we got someone.

The type of player that we are going for now is of a higher calibre and not 2 a penny so when we miss out them there aren't as many alternative options.

We rate ourselves as huge but some foreign bloke will look at us and think , "well if they are that big, why are they not in c.l. ? I can go to Partizan Panasportinaikos who have got an easy draw and look like they might be in c.l. group stages, giving me greater exposure."

We as fans seem to be going ape about some of the players we have been linked with this summer, yet until being linked have never heard of them before, going ape that we aren't breaking our transfer record for someone we may or may not have seen on a highlights show once on Eurosport when holidaying on the Costa Brava.

As soon as we are linked with a player in the Prem' that plays for a club who finished below us then they have been dismissed as crap/[Poor language removed]/not fit to wear the shirt, yet they have been plying their trade in the most competitive league in the world. I think we may have raised our expectations a little higher than others rate us and agents/clubs have been happy to let us talk to their "stars" who for all we know have already been linked with c.l. clubs, so interest from us reignites their interest as they think they may miss out.

Why we haven't got the players we have been going for only the parties involved know but the point is........ there aren't many players available of the calibre that we are chasing.
 


Moyes said after Blackburn we are short 6 or 7 players. At that number, only some of them are likely to be real quality but the others could be on loan from clubs who don't want them or Championship signings. I can't figure out why those deals were not done early in the summer while working on the big deals.

Have you noticed as well, there is not a strong link to any player in the press this weekend. The way we conduct business means that there is nothing happening any time soon as it's our way to have it in the papers for days before we sign.

7 Players needed, 14 days to go. We need to sign one every 2nd day til August 31st. Probably end up though with 3 squad players and no more.
 
Im getting sick of people saying, when our injured players return we will be in much better shape, we will on what we have now, but on last season....errrr no we wont. We only have 5 players injured, cahill, pienaar, vdm, vaughan and hibbert. Even with them back we would have to play either a defender out of position or rodwell in midfield. That is how bad the situation has got, even with a fully fit squad we will struggle to play our preferred formation with proven players in each position. At premier league level that is nowhere near good enough. How can it be we can realise how bad a state we are in and no-one at the club can? There is no urgency about us, we have less than 2 weeks till the window closes.

Err no we wont. We will have Arteta and Pienaar on the wings, Osman and Cahill in the middle with Neville at DM. So pretty much like last season.

Agree completely. The people saying we'll be ok with our players back all include VDM in the list. Last year, nobody gave a toss if he was fit or not. Sums up how weakend we are.
 

How is neville's position dm? Just because he can play there doesnt mean he should, just like baines on the left wing, jags in the dm role. Nev plays right back 99% of the time, the reason being he is useless in the middle. Cars was dm last season.

That does not work and Moyes knows it. Wasn't Neville the DM the night we were slaughtered in Bucharest. I thought the only good thing coming out of that game was we found out one position it is unsafe to let Neville play.
 
wtf has what any of you have said got to do with this thread, post it in the other threads, the question remains, is there a shortage of top notch players and thats why when we dont get who we are rumoured with there is no-one else of equal quality.
i.e. moutinho bid falters, linked to bullard, kenwright slated and moyes basically told to walk by sections of our fans.
i will not have this thread hijacked unless it is of a nature that refers to top quality meat and pastry produce or scenes of a gratuitous sexual nature.

Sorry to have offended but maybe I did not make my point well 1st time. We need 7 players minimum. They cannot all be quality so lets say 3 quality and 4 squad players. Even if we struggle with the big buys, that's no reason why we struggle with the loans/lesser players to fill out the squad. Yes there's a shortage of quality but that's no excuse for signing nobody when you need so many.

tbh it was more the other replies, your reply seemed to be the only relevant one.
