how on earth do they know how to get home, even if they have been dropped hundreds of miles away..

one of lifes wonders..

My late Father in Law was a very good pigeon fancier. Holds records and all sorts.

The non scientific reason is cos they want to get home. (Ace tricks to make them desperate to get back!) The scientific reason how they do that is probably the same reason birds migrate 1000's of miles every year, to the same place. Then fly back.

Not far off. One trick is to keep the male and female apart via wire mesh in the coup. If the male is the racer, and the female is on heat, he will lace it home, PDQ.

If the female is the racer, wait till she has a clutch of eggs, then blow another one, (take the yolk out), put a small maggot in it so it moves a bit, then put it under her the day before the race. She will be frantic to get home cos she thinks an egg is hatching soon.
