South African Pienaar to miss Everton’s cup semi-final
6 January 2008

JOHANNESBURG - South African midfielder Steven Pienaar will not be allowed to play for Everton in Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final against Chelsea after being ordered to report for his country’s African Nations Cup preparations, team officials said on Sunday.

Pienaar had hoped to join up with the South African squad after the cup tie but coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has insisted all player report by Tuesday for the start of the Nations Cup build-up.

The team has also told central defender Nasief Morris he cannot stay for Panathinaikos’s derby match against archrivals Olympiakos in the Greek league next week.

Morris will arrive in South Africa on Tuesday after playing for his club in the Greek league against Apollon on Sunday, officials added.

South Africa have enforced a rule that stipulates that all players are available 14 days before the start of a continental championship. South Africa meet Angola in their opening match at the Nations Cup in Ghana on Jan. 23.

Hope they get tonked in every match....

Dont say that :( COME ON BAFANA BAFANA!

I mentioned in another thread that SAFA wouldnt allow it, theyre complete [Poor language removed].

Cut some slack? Why?

Its not as if he'd miss a game for SA if he stayed for Chelsea is it?

We have got Pienaar in the form of his life at the minute, great fitness.... and they can't even be that lenient?

Am sure Pienaar will be overjoyed with SA, am he'll want to go out there and play his best for a manager who wouldn't let him play in arguably the biggest game of his career.

Sorry, but along with 99.9% of Evertonians, I'll want SA to get stuffed every game and have Pienaar back.

This is nuts.

What's the worst that can happen, he misses two days training? Who cares, surely playing in a match is a better way to keep his fitness levels up anyway. Those bad, bad melts.

True mate, but to be fair this is the first time its happened this season, we were all delighted after alkmar away and it was basicly the same team arguably stronger.

You could see thats what hurt Moyes the most, that some didnt step up judgeig by his after match comments, i feel the next three months will be telling on many fringe players at the club and unless they come in to the team and perform then the futures for me are in jepordy.

I was being sarcastic. Like I said previously, SAFA arent nice, but I'm not gonna want SA to get stuffed because of them.

Advantages of giving special dispensation to Pienaar:

1. He's allowed to play in a semi final ergo his Morale is boosted, which can only help both his country and his club.

2. He maintains match fitness.

3. He believe his country cares about his current predicament of trying to prove himself worthy of a permanent deal to everton.

4. His other team mates in SA, know that in similar pivotal career moments they too could recieve dispensation - and that there country wouldn't be shortsighted and petty.

Disadvantages of not giving special dispensation;

1. Permanent and lasting damage between Pienaars club (hopefully everton) and SA.

2. Complete demotivation to be called up to play by SA again.

3. That sinking feeling of what could've been as Pienaar runs round cones on a training ground as his club side fight for a place at Wembley (a fight that he was instrumental in, and can no longer take part in).

4. The possibility that other players seeing this will simply retire as soon as they get a juicy long contract.

There are probs more to add to the list above. Extremely, viciously short sighted.

Personally hope they lose every game and half of SA falls into the sea.

If there was a conflicting international match, then fair enough. We are talking about some insipid training camp. Pienaar has fought all season to play in an everton shirt, to play in a semi final and stake a place in Wembley. They pissed on his dreams so he could join camp on time. Their justification (which only large stupid media scared organisations can come up with) is that if Pienaar want to join late, everyone will want to join late.

Not everyone is in a [Poor language removed] semi final dickheads.

[Poor language removed] em.

If I was Moyes and Pienaar, I'd sign him up for a six year contract in the summer and then, when all the work permit stuff goes through, get him to retire from international football. Would serve them right. And hopefully all SA's best players would do the same.

then maybe SA can look at the [Poor language removed] in charge of their FA.

You do realize im from SA right?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've read and seen lots and lots of reports on the shitness of SAFA, they actually dont give a [Poor language removed] about much.
