PHIL NEVILLE believes Mikel Arteta has all the qualities needed to succeed him as Everton captain.

The versatile 33-year-old has skippered the Blues since David Weir left Goodison to join Rangers in January 2007.

Neville is fiercely proud of wearing the armband but when the time comes to step down he believes manager David Moyes has the ideal replacement in Arteta.

The Spaniard recently ended speculation about his future by signing a new deal to keep him with the Blues until 2015.

“I see Mikel as a true leader for this team,” Neville said.

“He’s someone who will be a fantastic captain for this club.

“He’s that type of player and he’s that influential in the team. People listen to him and respect him – he has that aura about him.

“When he does something he leads by example and when he says something people listen. That’s why it’s so important we managed to keep hold of him.”

Meanwhile, Neville has called on England boss Fabio Capello to promote Jack Rodwell to the full international squad alongside Blues team-mate Phil Jagielka for next month’s Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Interesting article. I'm not sure I personally would have chosen Arteta over Jagielka or Heitinga myself, but he would be a good choice. Perhaps this also means the Neville is considering retiring soon? If so I would like to see him stay on as a coach, as he has been a great professional and would set a good example to the youngsters he would presumably work with.

I can see Phil Neville taking the reigns when Moyes becomes the inevitable successor to Taggart.

Probably doesn't mean that Neville is considering standing aside immediately though. In my opinion what he provides to the side in the way of organisation leadership far outweighs the factors everyone derides him for whilst questioning his place in the side.

Good encouraging stuff though, shows the respect that Arteta has earnt within the camp.

Really can't see that happening Brownie. He's never knowingly left Neville out of his side...

First time for everything mate! Neville can't last forever. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he had a word with the manager about it himself, they seem to have that kind of relationship.

Yeah I'd like to see Nevill stay on as a coach/or any other position he'd be good at. Would pick Mikel as well.

Ok guys.

Ehat exactly does Neville provide as captain on the pitch that any other player couldn't do?

Sure we know what he does off the pitch so therefor makes a good club captain.

Of course its not easy to say but try and explain why Neville is so good as captain on the pitch we would suffer if he wasn't and someone else done the job on pitch.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fellaini was in contention.

Hmmm. He has the right attitude, but I think there are better contenders.

Right now I want Arteta to be captain. Jags would be ace too.

In the future though, there can only be one contender. Rodwell.
