Former English county cricket captain and respected commentator and journalist Peter Roebuck has died aged 55.

Roebuck died at his hotel in Newlands, Cape Town where he was covering the current Test series between Australia and South Africa.

Roebuck skippered Somerset in the 1980s before beginning a long media career, primarily working for Fairfax and the ABC.

Fairfax reported that Roebuck was spoken to by police earlier on Saturday before his death.

The manager of ABC Grandstand, Craig Norenbergs, praised Roebuck for his work in broadcasting and reporting cricket.

"Incredibly sad news. He was an integral part of the Grandstand commentary team apart from being a magnificent print journalist," said Norenbergs.

I was always a fan of his commentary, he and a couple of others used to always make the coverage a little more interesting. I was shocked and saddened to hear he had passed away. No cause yet has been revealed for his death.

ABC Grandstand's coverage of the cricket is never going to be the same. :(

Always Hated him -not least as Somerset Captain , with the Beefy , Viv , Joel thing . THEN , he became an Aussie cause they were good .

Still , wouldnt wish it on anyone , so , I suppose , R.I.P.

Killed himself apparently. I don't think there was much love for him in the uk because he was seen as forcing Botham and Ricahrds out of Somerset and then wrote quite spiteful books about Botham and Boycott.

There is no denying he was a very insightful broadcaster.

Always sad when someone is so miserable they take their own life.

This story seems to be very odd, there was a police officer in his room when he supposedly committed suicide, seems a weird story.

They came to arrest him for sexual assault of a young man, it seems. He asked permission to go to change into clean clothes and used the opportunity to throw himself off the sixth floor of his hotel. He has form in the young men department, it appears. Somehow, I either never knew this or else forgot it a while ago.
