Can't find the old thread I started, so I'll start another. No harm eh?

Ok, well I was going to buy a MacBook Pro in the next 3 months, but have decided that it's not going to be needed as my iMac is still pretty powerful - I just can't play certain games on it.

Plus the laptop my wife has is fairly low on performance (Vista machine), so I'm thinking a nice new PC with some good specs and Windows 7 on it.

Basically I'm looking for the most efficient costings for:

Plenty of HD space
At least 4gb memory, with capacity to expand
3ghz Processor
Gaming Graphics Card with 512mb
Obviously a monitor also.

Don't really want a laptop as I know you pay a premium on them, but i've seen these Dell computers that are fairly good, but I am open to suggestion.

Important thing is that I can upgrade it also.

Intel Gaming PCs - Custom Built Gaming PC Base Units

Your welcome.

Ghost, by setting the 3Ghz CPU speed you are really setting yourself up for failure.

With the new i7's and i5's that are quad core, a 2.6Ghz cpu is gonna blaze. If you want a 3 Ghz i7 you are gonna be paying out the ass of it.

And really, you can't 'build' computers???? It is like Lego...really easy to do.

Not sure I understand.

And I'm sure it's really easy to build a computer. I used to mess around with my old Gateway 2000 DX400 years ago, but it's a different game now surely.

Apparently the I7 and I5 chips from intel are quad core meaning when your not using all four cores the power from the cores not being used are moved to the cores that are - apparently this turbo boost will allow the processers to work faster then their baseline i.e a 2.8 ghz chip may hit speeds of say 3.46ghz whith the turbo boost.

Some are sceptical about this - especially as the I7 and I5 chips are the new kids on the block.

The last link Dylan posted suggests the i7-950 will go on to break over clocking records. How long before the biggest most expensive part of the pc is not the cpu but the machine connected to it to stop it from becoming magma.

Heres a usefull article on the I7-9 series, I7-8 series and I 5 chips if all is to bebeleived an I7-8 serious chip or even the I5 - Chip will save a lot compared to a PC with a I7-9 series especialy when you consider the jump in turbo boost and possible max speeds.

Intel's New Core i7 and Core i5 Processors Explained - PC World

So I'm better getting the I7-9 as it will allow me to have a faster computer? That's all I want to know. Reading abouts chips and stuff makes my brain hurt. :)

Why on earth are you worrying about how fast your computer is m8?
A dual core pc is plenty fast enough for most stuff, and there are budget quad cores out there that are a fraction of the price of your I7 range with great reviews.

Are you running servers for a company here, or wanting to play a few games?

Well why are people pushing me towards this i7 thing?
