Good point. He's Bayern's first choice RB and Germany's first choice LB isn't he? Great achievment that.

Still winning Serie A as CB and the World Cup as RB is pretty cool.

I think from a fan's perspective you can underestimate the difference between roles. Playing CB and RB, or LB and RB, both to a world class standard is a ridiculous feat.

Maldini was world class at CB and LB dont forget, the best defender I've seen in my lifetime, also a suberb leader, a beautiful head of hair, good looking and comes across as a top fella.

Roberto Carlos, that free kick, every lad spent the entire summer trying to hit the ball on valve and curl it round, great times

Great defender. Usually came off the field in a clean kit cause he was that good at getting the ball off players.

Clean as a whilstle, is right mini-Maldini.

Maldini, honestly, he gave me pleasures as a footballer no woman ever could. Immense player

Maldini was the best defender of his generation. He could do everything. His tackling was good, he had superb technique, was a fantastic athlete, good in the air, tactically astute and was a superb professional. His honours list is ridiculous as well. I mean 5 Champions League wins is mental. Oh and he's a good looking swine.

Make Zanetti the other full back and you've got my two of my favourite players bombing down the flanks.

If we're talking of late 90s full backs, though then you can't beat Lilian Thuram.

Has there ever been another player who played different positions for his club and his country and was world class in both?

He was World Class as a Centre back really.

Great left-back and one of the only people I know to of looked like a syrian terrorist in their mid-40's from the age of 19.

Maldini was one of my heroes.....only overshadowed in my opinion by Franco Baresi who was the Beckenbauer of his era....absolute class and just seemed to stroll through games with ease.....2 fantastic players in one of the best club sides I have seen in my lifetime.

Tassotti - Costacurta - Baresi - Maldini

Has there been a better back four?
