Not from falling, but from booze, apparently. Never heard of him TBH, but found this on Youtube.

You simply have to watch it to believe it; he climbed without ropes, harness, or anything, 100s of feet up sheer cliffs. Scroll through to about 10 mins, and waste 15 minutes in awe. (If you cant be arsed, fair enough, but at the very least catch his move at 23 mins; the opening sequence of Mission Impossible tried to copy it. This guy did for real!)

No real interest in climbing, but caught a documentary (may well have been the one you linked) called "World at your fingertips" or something ages ago. It made me consider trying it out... for about 5 minutes, then I made another brew.

Amazing stuff though.

RIP le blond.

Watched about 30 seconds of this before my vertigo kicked in

What a nutter

Thats the one mate. Worth a second look.

I'm sure the Esk's probably knew of him...I'll check it out, sounds interesting.

I knew of him but don't know him, saw him climb once in the Gorge du Verdon (where he lived), he radically changed the view of sport climbing in the USA. He was an incredible climber, makes me look like an 80 year old arthritic to be honest.

He was often quoted as being like a ballerina, this video clip shows why http://www.veoh.com/watch/v16615648qTYsyb3t?h1=opera+vertical

At least he remained undefeated by the mountains even if other things in life may have got him in the end. Not many climbers who do what he did (and there are not many) can say the same.

RIP
