Everton v Newcastle

After last week’s rousing comeback, another home game is exactly what the Toffees to help them pick up their first three points of the season. There’s been mention of this being the worst start to the season since 1994, which is frankly another one of those irrelevant statistics which are common place in football today. There was a time the BBC wouldn’t even show the league table until ten games had been played. We’re only four games in to the season and though it hasn’t been the start David Moyes would have wanted, Everton are just two wins off third place. So let’s not go hitting the panic button just yet.

First things first will be to start this game where they left off the game against United. Not the screaming at the referee for blowing the whistle mid-shot part but the aggressive attacking play. The Magpies have been a bit erratic so far this season and coming off a home defeat to Blackpool, confidence may be a little brittle so an early goal will knock them back on their heels. Everton were by far the better side for the first twenty minutes or so last weekend but were unable to capitalise with a goal. Newcastle’s defence and goalkeeper will offer up more chances than United’s if attacked in the same manner and if you fancy an early goal then Everton to score up to and including the 24th minute is 15/8. If you’re feeling particularly bullish then Everton to be leading at the ten minute mark is 11/2. Mikel Arteta has called on his team-mates to avoid the stress of needing late goals by scoring early, so you can be sure the intention will be there. The Spaniard notched his first of the season with his equaliser and he’s 8/1 to follow that up with the first goal in this game. If he does then the Everton-Everton double result at 7/5 is worth a look.

As always Tim Cahill has to be considered when making your goalscorer bets and he’s 6/1 to score first and 15/8 anytime. If Moyes decides to start with Yakubu, the Nigerian frontman’s power and pace has the potential to cause real problems for a Newcastle backline which isn’t exactly fleet of foot. He’s the 5/1 favourite to break the deadlock.

Newcastle do not come without threats of their own, particularly the impressing Andy Carroll but the in-form Phil Jagielka is relishing the physical challenge he poses. Other than last week’s draw, the Everton backline has looked in good shape and it’s hard to see Tim Howard being beaten three times in this game. Everton are 8/13 to win but the real value will be in the correct score market, if you can predict it of course. Everton to win 1-0 at 11/2, 2-0 at 13/2, 2-1 at 13/2 and 3-1 at 11/1 are the most likely outcomes. The main thing will be picking up the three points and buoyed by last week’s finish, Moyes should comfortably avoid another misconduct charge.

Before everyone drops money on Cahill scoring first, he's rumoured not to be playing/starting etc due to injury. Arteta bet looks semi tasty.

I fancy the scoring in the first ten minutes - but my record in these things is woeful. See if you can get a bet on us NOT scoring in the first ten minutes. If I'm betting the other way its nailed on.
