Pacing our season

Just putting this thought out there. When we finished 4th we started well (opening game drubbing against Arsenal aside) but towards the end of that season we were largely hanging onto 4th spot for dear life.

Since then it seems like we start seasons slowly and finish them strongly. This latter trait is something I've noticed in other teams, with the aim being to peak when competitions are decided at the end of the season.

The big sides seem able to do this because they have the squads to play at perhaps 80/90% early in the year and still grind out results before really hitting their stride in spring/summer. We don't seem able to do that, whether it's our style of play or the personnel I don't know.

This is of course just a theory but it seems a huge coincidence that we so often start seasons poorly and finish them strongly.

I wouldn't say we're not boss but maybe we're not quite able to win games when we're not 100% on form, whereas the very best can grind out results at 80/90%.

we were at 80% against United and got a result.

Against Newcastle we were at about 10%. Seriously. It was a shocker.

We never play well against Newcastle though.. Always been a crappy fixture for us..
We should start to pick up points, but to have played this many games and STILL be in the bottom 3 is ridiculous

I reckon its cause after 8 years in the job and 5 games into the new season with pretty much the same players as last year Moyes is still trying to figure out what system to play.

But yeah, fck knows why we start so badly, its very, very strange.

Im sure Moyes is baffled by it as well, do our players spend all Summer eating cake and snorting coke? Does it take them 2-3 months to get up to speed? Is Moyes Pre-Season work out TOO hard? Is Steve Round really the Devil?

What ever the reason, we need to start winning and winning soon.

everyone is baffled... DM is A honest enough lad to admit it me [personally the way we set up to play and go bout the game means for it to work( i.e the 2nd half of last season) we need at least 8 of the 11 players to be peaking or very close to peaking and this doesnt happen at the start of a season ...we could shout that it should but reality is you aint goin to get a team like ourselves to hit the ground runnin and hav the ability for it to continue all season
