Just putting this thought out there. When we finished 4th we started well (opening game drubbing against Arsenal aside) but towards the end of that season we were largely hanging onto 4th spot for dear life.
Since then it seems like we start seasons slowly and finish them strongly. This latter trait is something I've noticed in other teams, with the aim being to peak when competitions are decided at the end of the season.
The big sides seem able to do this because they have the squads to play at perhaps 80/90% early in the year and still grind out results before really hitting their stride in spring/summer. We don't seem able to do that, whether it's our style of play or the personnel I don't know.
This is of course just a theory but it seems a huge coincidence that we so often start seasons poorly and finish them strongly.
