Over-rated players

Which players do you think are over-hyped/over-rated?

Xabi Alonso is one of the main ones for me. Sure, he can pull of a few good passes, but then he does a simple 10 yard one and it'll be described as a "masterful" pass.

Ljungberg. Just blatantly over-rated. Had one good season, been average at best since.

Also think Fabregas is abit over-rated. Good player and will be quality in the future but not as good as being made out now. It annoys me the recognition he gets compared to Arteta. How many goals this season has Fabregas scored?. 1?. He's not expected to score a vast amount, but his performances have been far from solid this season, yet he's in the shortlist for player of the season.

Carrick, Jenas and Ashley Cole aswell.

Reactions: EY.

Pretty much everyone that plays for the 'big four'. Also, and I know this might be controversial, I'd say Ronaldinho. I've seen videos on YouTube etc. and there's no doubt he has fantastic ability. But for me, he's too inconsistent. The vast majority of times I've seen him play on TV he hasn't looked anything special at all. When he turns it on he's awesome, but he doesn't turn it on enough

I agree with Fabregas, he's a good player for sure but Barca seem able of producing players like that for fun. Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta, Arteta are all similar style players.

I've never rated Totti, I think he has a huge reputation yet has never done anything much on the big stage. Ditto Rooney post Euro 2004, supposed to use that as a platform to become one of the best strikers in the world but has stayed still, or gone backwards even.

Stuart Downing seems to have a lot of praise heaped on him, yet whenever I've seen him for England he's been awful. Jenas likewise. I suppose for a player with 50+ caps you could say the same about Phil Neville but I think he's just someone that has made the most of what he has.

Raul is a player who's been living off of reputation for years. At his best he was one of the finest strikers in Europe but the past three or four seasons he's been very average, yet still skippers Real

Ballack is a player I've never really liked and since being here has done nothing to change my perspective of him. Shevchenko on the other hand I was a big fan of and expected him to set the PL alight but for some reason it hasn't happened.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a player who seems overly hyped by himself as much as anything. Made a lot of noises pre-World Cup about how he was the best in the world etc. and preceeded to have a shocking tournament.

And it wouldn't be an over-rated players thread without an honourable mention for old Golden Balls. To bastardise Monty Python, he's not the messiah, he's just a very good footballer.

Could'nt agree more. Add Danny's Alonso, Carragher, Reina, Terry, Ferdinand, Lennon, Defoe, Giggs.

Not sure you can really include Giggs in any over-rated list. If anything he's under-rated because he never gets to play in major international tournaments. Another who I think is under-rated is Scholes, who I think has been the best English player since Gazza, yet because he doesn't get in the press is easily overlooked.

Spot on about Giggs. Also been the model professional.

I'm not saying that he is not a good player, I do however believe that when he has been mentioned as the best winger in the league and the one player that the England Team needed people were overrating him. It is not that many seasons ago that he could make a good cross - that part of his game has however been improved.

Suits, I have to disagree with you on one count - Barry. He certainly was a very over-rated player in the past. But this season, each time I've watched him play for Villa, he's been outstanding. So let's call him a previously over-rated, now improved player.

i struggle to look past where the majority of his goals have come from.

the 12 yard spot. no media story in hounding the villans about diving though.

Spot on about Alonso. That guy is average at best (of course Shabs probably though he was the best midfielder in the country).

I'd also say, and not because he's a red, that Crouch is overrated. If I'm starting a team from scratch today, I can count on both hands strikers I'd take over him.

Underrated, that's easy.

Lee Carsley.
