Everton have suffered an injury blow ahead of the festive fixture rush with news that Leon Osman could be sidelined for up to six weeks by a broken toe.
The midfielder sustained the injury in the Carling Cup victory over West Ham at Upton Park last Wednesday. He played on with it against the Hammers in the Premier League return clash on Saturday after receiving a painkilling injection but an x-ray has since confirmed the news that will prevent the in-form midfielder continuing in the side.
Moyes said: “It’s an absolutely terrible blow. He broke his toe in the first five minutes of the Cup game but he battled on and it shows you how tough he is. He was in a bad way but still wanted to play.
“He had a scan and it showed a big crack and we think he is going to be out for between four to six weeks. Leon’s form had been good and he has been playing a big part in everything that we have achieved recently.”
Osman has been an influential playmaker in the Everton midfield, rising to prominence as part of the recent system that has helped the Toffees put together a run of 12 games unbeaten.
Osman will not travel to Holland for Everton's final game in Uefa Cup Group A. He will be vying for a return to action in time for the Carling Cup semi-final second leg next month.
With Thursday's game irrelevant for Everton - who have already secured top spot in the Group - the manager has confirmed he will make changes.
Joseph Yobo could miss out because of a niggling ankle problem, but Andrew Johnson could be handed a starting berth after coming off the bench to net against West Ham on Saturday.
Moyes adds: “He will play a big part in the weeks and months to come. We are playing well. I’m happy to bring in players, as we have a few to come back.
“We’ve got a few knocks and bruises. Joseph Yobo has been struggling with his ankle a bit, while Alan Stubbs and Leighton Baines are still out so we’ll have to see how we go."

been outstanding recently.

his accurate passing helps us keep the ball and cements the midfield.

Tommy G? Or back to 4-4-2?

I really dont like that sort of news.
-Could lead to Neville playing in midfield
-Ossie has been doing really well lately
-One less goal-scorer

I think Moyes should play Gravesen in his place or we could revert to 4-4-2

please no. Neville shouldn't appear in our midfield ever again unless its a direct replacement for carsley.

gravs or go back to 4-4-2.

god knows we've got the strikers for it.

wow... that is a dampner and no mistake. ozzie has been playing the best football of his career this season.

grav or 4-4-2? i suspect 4-5-1 at old trafford with hibbert right back and neville in the midfield.

omg. thats depressing. lets get the grave digger in the side!

part of me would like to see 4-4-2.

I don't ever fancy our chances at Old Trafford as they are a bunch of cheats mostly. You are not normally allowed to beat United there.

So [Poor language removed] it, play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Get at them.

Go down in a blaze of glory, shooting.

Might explain his glaring miss on Saturday.

Feel sorry for the lad, he had a great run of form going, only for this to end it.

we could keep giving him injections until the transfer window opens.

just a thought.

Yobo played with a broken toe for ages.

To be honest, this worries me almost as much as if Cahill or Arteta were injured. Ossie is so naturally talented on the ball and is a great outlet for the rest of the team to just give him the ball to get them out of trouble and head goalward.

Real real blow this. Time for Tommy to step up and make a case for himself. As soon as Pienaar goes though and with Ossie out injured, we will struggle. Damn.

recall Anderson de Silva?

By all accounts he is a kicker that would not look out of place in an old Bolton side or todays Newcastle team...

Not too sure he would fit in with our 'continental style' (Lawro's words of all people!)

This could be Mad Dog's chance, hopefully he will convince Moyes by putting in a good performance against AZ. Remember how well he geeled with Cahill and Carsley the last time around. If fit and if he is selected I actually think that Gravesen will be even better in 4-5-1 than Ossie.
