Orange and Blue

I cannot express enough my disgust for Orange walks. Only 5 days ago a 12 year old girl was bottled in Glasgow as she watched the event.
I hate that Scottish football has been stained by these morons who cannot separate their bigotry from the beautiful game.

Growing up in Scotland, particularly in my area, if you were a catholic you supported Celtic and if you were protestant you supported Rangers. I was neither and drifted towards Rangers on my own. I know many people who do not even believe in God, but will proudly attend the Orange walk in their rangers strip, holding a union jack in one hand and a bottle of buckfast in the other.

My brother was threatened and had bottles thrown at him because he crossed the street in front of the march, he only wanted a bloody Subway. It's a culture that promotes getting beaten purely for wearing the wrong colour of top (in this case it's green).

No place in football. No place in modern society.

Technically, Everton is the Catholic club and Liverpool is the Protestant one, but it's not as big an issue between the two clubs as it is with certain others.

I know Catholics who support Liverpool and vice versa. The relgious status of the club played literally no part in me choosing it as the club I wanted to support.

I personally am very against the intense Sectarianism that is on display in some football rivalries. I know those people just think they're being "90 Minute Biggots", but I just think that sort of behaviour is exceedingly unhealthy and only widens divisions in society

How come Mickey? St Domingos was a Protestant/Methodist church. I thought so anyrate.

But there is no religious split at all thank god.

The Orange Order in Northern Ireland is basically a sectarian organisation which uses their annual 'celebration' (of a battle 350 years ago in Ireland) to intimidate those of a different religious persuasion by marching through their neighbourhoods playing offensive music and burning huge pyres of wood.
Very similar to Neo Nazi marches if you ask me.

I don't know what the motive is but I remember the Orange Lodge marches down County Road when I was young. I believe these days the "celebration" of the Lodge in Liverpool is more likely to be a day out to Llandudno or somewhere.

If so, good on them..........

A tangent subject has been raised here, "Does religion has a place in football"?

There are loads of footballers who bring religion to the field of play, from players like Pienaar with his God is great T-Shirt, to players blessing themselves on the pitch, kissing a cross on their necklace, pointing to the sky after a goal. To fans with turbans or other religious outfits, it is such a can of worms to even begin to dismiss and remove.

I think people have tried to make those associations, but I don't think it was ever so. After all, what kind of self-respecting Catholic club has an Anglican church in the freakin' stadium?

The Glasgow situation has kind of cast a presumptive sectarian shadow over other two-team cities in the UK.

.

A few years back I was held up when an Orange march went down London Road. I was absolutely fuming and got out of the car to "express my anger" when I caught sight of the sorry crowd that were marching in their sashes banging their drums. I can best describe it as looking like a Laurel and Hardy movie but in glorious technocolour. Instantly it looked laughable rather than threatening.

The nickname "Toffees" was apparently used long before the formation of EFC as a nickname for Irish immigrants in Liverpool. I'm not sure if there is any link but I'm sure that helped with the assumption that Everton has Irish/Catholic links.
