Think it's the third most played sport over there. And it's growing.

It's been like that for 3 decades. Kids would play, then become disinterested because there was no way to watch the top leagues, no money in the sport professionally and no one to teach the sport properly.

It's getting better, but nowhere near where it needs to be to continually produce top footballers.

Toronto seem to be going for it.

I never get the American mentality - not a criticism by the way!

Free market economy - cap on some players wages!

Biggest democracy in the world - two party system!

To be fair cherry come and Wendy burger is ace!

Isn't togger the most played sport by under 13 year olds over there or something?

I think they focus too much on athleticism. Last year we played a team from Kansas who apparently all pay about £6k a year to play Sunday league and were coming over to play the academies. We beat them 1-0 and they got battered 5,6,7 whatever by Blackburn and Wigan but bloody hell they could run. And they all had good technique too. It was just weird how they didn't know how to back in, shape one way then pass the other, anticipate a backpass like Naismith did etc.

One the 'mericans catch up with how to play the game at a level with that understanding they'll take the piss out of us all.

Our training at the youth level is getting better (certainly compared to when I was a "youth") but we're still miles behind the organized youth development programs in Europe.

You're right in that our kids can run all day and even have a bit of talent here or there but it's often raw. Technically and tactically, we've still got a long way to go. One thing that has helped on the professional level here (MLS) is that when we bring players like Beckham, Henry, & Cahill over here, they've already been exposed to those types of systems up to what it takes to be a professional at the top level. That will certainly help our MLS clubs in terms of running a professional set up but for me, it's our youth system that still needs a lot of work.

Once MLS gets to a point where the money is there (salaries, investment, etc....) I believe that we'll have a legitimate academy system in place for each club where we'll be able to develop players at an earlier age. We've started down this road but it's in it's infancy and still competes against other local clubs for players.

Easy.

Coke vs. Pepsi = winner is the consumer. Best product survives. Coke is not dependent upon Pepsi.

Cap player wages (well, I'm in favor of a salary cap per team rather than player) = unlike the cola wars, the New York Yankees or whomever need competition to exist. Competition can only exist if other teams feel like they can compete. The health of franchises (and thus owners & players) is dependent upon a system in which YOUR TEAM has a shot.

The NFL is wildly successful because of a team salary cap. Your team's success is decided more by having competent management, scouting, coaching, and players rather than deeper pockets.

MLB (Baseball) is hurting in a lot of markets simply because they're the Crystal Palace to the Man City Yankees. Why bother going, investing your cash or emotion if your team is out of it 3 weeks into the season and is nothing more than a farm team for other squads.

Would the Americans introduce relegation? And maybe stop rewarding the worst teams by giving then a great draft position. You see teams in other sports being woeful when they've got nothing to play for and no fear of the drop as you know they've been told to be crap to increase their draft pick

Going off topic a touch here, but for comparison, footy is also the most played sport in New Zealand by kids. However, once they get big enough (around 15) to play rugby, the parents throw them into it, and football suffers a massive talent drain. I'm positive the same thing happens in the USA to kids playing NFL.

Never on relegation. I don't think draft position matters all that much. Its not like you are grabbing Messi with the 1st pick or anything. The best players are all DPs anyway so in a way you do have to invest.

Salary cap has its disavantages: for example teams like NE run the club on the cheap. However it keeps some parity and if there is one thing that the MLS footie has over most of the world its that anyone can win the title (except for Toronto).

In terms of resources and coaching talent the US academy system is decades behind.

I played second tier academy and reserves (only 6 years ago, had a chance with two MLS academies) and once I got hurt I was let go. Don't have the expertise or budget for that kind of thing. Not to mention the facilities were atrocious but are improving....

Random, but a Former teammate of mine was drafted first round to Montreal this year which was cool to see.

Agreed.

Relegation is probably looked at here as "Un-American." The reality is that it would be hard to tell a new owner that "Hey, you're gonna pony up for a new club, and possibly a new stadium and oh, by the way, you may not be in MLS if you finish last."

For that matter, I seriously doubt we'll ever go to a single table system here. I think the playoffs are here to stay (another American aspect) although they need some tweaking in the format.
