O'Neill

"it is understood that the club's American owner wanted to trim the playing squad and cut the wage bill this summer, while O'Neill wanted money to spend to bolster his squad to continue their challenge to break into the top four."

Been saying this for a while. £90 million debts and 76% wage:turnover

Lerner and O'Neill been arguing over this for awhile.

Next I expect some turmoil at Spurs over spending.

O'Neill obviously hasn't read the Moyes play book. Make it look like you're on board with the prudent policy and save face. He's got a lot to learn.

So this Lerner isn't all he was cracked up to be?

How odd.

Fingers crossed O'Neill gets his way. They'll fall, like a stack of cards.

nah DaveK its as much the fact their wage bill is 16% higher a percent of turnover to Everton and their debt is twice Evertons.

been saying for weeks.

As I said, Spurs will be next something similar.

Not sure about that Danny. He's trying to trim their debts and their high wage bill.

Basically this "investment" - did people think that these owners would just keep giving the clubs money for nothing?

Kenwright trimmed the wage bill when Moyes came in (13 left in the first summer 2002).

Then its been run on a budget ever since.

People only see money being pumped in as good ownership. Its bull. Good ownership is when a club is run on it's own generated resources.

Saying all these "investors" pumping money in was good, was like saying RBS was a well run bank!!!

Basically the wheat (Everton) is going to be sorted from the chaff (Villa) this summer.

The transfer and whole football market's changed.

And I'll clarify. Pumping money in for say building a huge asset - i.e. bricks/mortar stadium may be warranted as it increases revenue.

But pumping money in to buy a player who may be only in the club for 5 years and who's on huge wages (possibly reducing profit) is just insane when a cheaper option might be available, who may even do a better job.

e.g. Pienaar v A. Young - who would you rather have?

Villa's turnover hasn't increased and its not really that different to Everton's.

But Everton's wage bill is ONE SIXTH lower (almost a fifth lower).

Its a case of doing something more with less really is important. In business that's called EFFICIENCY.

The most successful businesses are often the most efficient in their industry. Businesses also hire the most efficient managers to do that because EFFICIENCY = PROFIT in general.

And another thing. Everton could incur debt in building a stadium, but the potential growth in revenue could see them surpass Villa's easily.

I remember Lerner's credentials being trumpeted by some poster who saw it as the antidote to leveraged by outs. I posted at the time that, from what I could gather, Lerner merely loaned on behalf of Villa money from a Lerner family Trust in order to fund his expansion at that club; that had to be paid back (+ interest) one day in the near future.

You would have thought he wouldn't go before the semi. Surely if they got a good result then , his hand would be stronger?
