When it starts I would just like to ask, primarily, our friends from overseas, their views on the Olympic opening ceremony and if they think it rivals that of Beijing.
Havent seen the whole thing. Seeing it in the US now. WOW...China was shock and awe this show is much more heart felt. Loved it. Am an American and think it is wonderful. The Queen in the helio with 007 was brilliant. You all must be so proud. I would be. Havent seen the end but really a true success. From south florida
I'll be completely honest, the modernisation of the west does not translate into a Cultural Spectacle like the Chinese put on.
Slightly More a cultural cringe. In alot of parts it was really boring.
That said, and the show started off really great, it just needed more Derek Jacobi. More Tom Wilkinson, or more Judi Dench. More Neeson, Gleeson, McGregor,
I didn't like the fact it shifted into 'Theatrical History of British Music Mode' it dragged on longer than the Grease Mega Mix.
What I would have done, or I'm thinking how to show the Music Vibe, would have lined up loads of Iconic British Bands and done some kind of Live Aid thing, with Bono, Sting, Elton, Waters, Howlett and Martin. Really smacked it out of the Park.
Bean needed Gervais, Brand, Izzard, Cleese, Pegg, Moran, Bailey, Ayoade to make a comedy short/stage event. It would have been EPIC!
And the creation of sports themselves like football and Cricket should have played a much larger role, as this is, the World Largest Sporting Event, not the Worlds Largest Concert Mega Mix.
Tim Berners Lee should have been joined by Logie Baird, Bell, Stevenson, Percy Shaw, Blumenlein, Wedgewood, Sturgeon and Babbage really showing off that the TV, Internet, Film, Cats Eyes, Stereos, Motors, Trains and Jet Engines were invented by Brits. A Brit invented Radar, the IPOD and even the Frikking Light Bulb before Edison patented it FFS!
On the whole, a really missed opportunity to showcase all the stuff you've done, and just slumped into a texting / lolling / omg party mix.
Good assessment.
Kind of confirmed what I was thinking. I did enjoy a lot of the music stuff I must say... probably because I was expecting coked up teenagers feeling each other up behind wheely bins whilst thumping dubstep crucified my ear drums.
K'inell mate, it would have lasted for the whole of the Olympics if they did all that. People where confused enough.I'll be completely honest, the modernisation of the west does not translate into a Cultural Spectacle like the Chinese put on.
