When Labone got injured via westy coming out for the ball in the 1970s championship run in - & Bally was made captain for the run in - Westy was not happy Bally was chosen - he admired him as a player, but not to lead the team - there must have been a fall-out as thy both stated they would not buy each other a drink after that - the next season - Westy told the Catt to give Labby the captaincy back - The Catt refused - & most of the players when the season started badly blamed Balls captaincy - the dressing room was lost & ball sold by the Catt - who in fairness to Bally had given him a free rein of how to treat players - on Bally leaving Keith Newton stated it was a blessing & he reckoned that's why he was sold - good riddance he stated .....

Just something I read in my various books of the way things went - the Catt got blamed for breaking a young team up too early as well though - perhaps all he had to do was swap captains ?

Westy did fall out with the fans in a European game at home after having a mare & putting two fingers up to the home crowd & was dropped - @degsy mentioned it yesterday ....

Westy was a top class keeper - & what happened IMO he predicted - Bally should have been relived of the captaincy after we won the title - hindsight is a great thing though -
Never knew that. Was Westy and Bally cool after that? Must been tough for Bally.

Remember meeting westy in my local early 2000 he told us few stories about is playing days at Everton
The one that sticks out is when bally was made captain things started to go wrong for him & westy
Remembers Alan on the phone to his Dad nearly crying saying how the players have got no respect for him
And it was affecting is game westy went on to say Alan was a top top player but not a captain
Also Brian labone was westy best friend on and of the field
