Now and Then - Which was Better ??

Hey, don't get me wrong my friend. When you & other respected Evertonians on this forum speak of "then" as you do, I have absolutely zero doubt in what you say. Only wish I could've been around to witness & appreciate myself.

That said, I very much look forward to sharing new moments & memories which are sure to come, on the very near horizon.

Just as soon as our Yanks put da hurtin' on those cowardly little lions this summer!

Possibly mate..

Another thing , mate about then which I haven't mentioned was the way I was taught to appreciate good football and goals mate even by the opposition. I remember us conceding a goal early on in my 'career' watching Everton and two fellas by me stood up and clapped (think it might have been Forest) not in a away fans in the home section kind of way. It made me think and then a ripple of applause broke out and I thought it was quite strange and demonstrated to me that our supporters could see quality when it was there. Taught me right there and then mate.

Interesting to hear you say that. One of the things that I believe draws outsiders "in" to the everton family is the overall level of quality of the fans. It's a major reason I believe so many yanks & even galaxy fans wanted to see Landon stay, & continue as fans even after he left.

And it wasn't just at games, there were so many little things which all pointed to the same overriding consensus--evertonians & the club in general are class, simply irresistible, top to bottom. Message boards like this, as silly as it sounds. You want oppssite ends of spectrum, go on a hull city board. Love jozy but hull fans were horrendous to interact with. Whereas evertonians have welcomed, educated, & enhanced my experience & passion for the beautiful game.

Of course that's the "now" speaking. So if you're saying "then" displayed above characteristics in greater levels...well I guess I would've liked to experience a taste.

Do you think the "kids" are no longer being taught the "proper" way, or would you say it's a more overall generational shift? From where I'm sitting, i'd take your younguns over those of other clubs any day.

To be honest mate just think its a general shift in attitude at the match. Pressure comes into now and a desperation for us to do well. I'm not saying that those things weren't there years ago but now the win at all costs mentally overides everything else. I've still clapped when someone has scored a class goal or at a piece of skill (latest being Clint Dempsey's backheel pass down the line the other week) and others do it but just not as much now. The whole pressure thing is there all the time now and you can see that with the manager situation. Lose 3 games on the bounce and you are on your last legs nowadays when stability is the key really. Our fans (well the majority of them) are class mate end of story !

In response to JDeezy...

Talking about ours, in short for the match going Evertonians which I think he's talking about ..... it's because it's almost like an act of worship father/son (daughter) kind of thing, where anything Everton along with the history is celebrated...

The thing with Landon, was he was coming to a club that does still maintain the "proper way" (thanks I believe to the manager and the supporters), in that many were just looking at him to come and show us what he could do. And that he could do the rest himself as long as he put the effort in.

We have our odd belter, but its a fact that these are few and far between because its not about the "glory" following Everton. Its the football... from top to bottom.

If we get glory all the better. Thats the aim of the game for us... but not the be all and end all. but the striving to be the best.

I dunno about anyone else. but my preoccupation right now is continually following the contract renewal situations...........

Everton is an obsession.

About sums it up. Cheers, matty.

Great in Invictus btw. A bit disappointed in the lack of sufficiently outlined details & backdrop of the story. I swear if I hadn't watched the ESPN special on it a week ago, I wouldn't have known half of the straightforward particulars of the storyline. Would it have hurt to make a few clear references to the fact that the All Blacks were from New Zealand?? Maybe it's me, just felt like it was a bit careless at times.

But I digress...good shout though MD 2020!

Another reason that things were better back when .... This courting of players through the media, their Agents going on Tv threatening clubs etc. Its bollocks and just unsettles everyone and damages the perception of the club. It just did not happen in this way. Imagine if we had £20 to spend and began putting stories in the media saying we are going after Jermain Defoe and we are willing to pay £14 million ?? The papers just wouldn't have it and they'd be questioning why Defoe would want to leave Spurs for us. Why is it different the other way round ? I always feel as though we are just an easy touch with the press, read some of the Rodwell stuff . They are devastated that someone dared to turn down the mancs and stay with Everton !!!

And breathe . . . . . aah that's better....

Boss Boss thread.

I've only experienced the 'now' unfortunatly. I honestly believe we're onto something special at Everton. Even if Pienaar leaves, we'l get a good slice of doh for him and we can replace him with one or maybe 2 players. So there is still reason to believe. I think it is probably going to be a two horse race but in the season or 2 after there will be 4 or 5 teams again who can realistically win it - us included, i really believe that. You only have to look at last season. Man Utd lost 7 games and still came 2nd, the sh1te the year before lost 2 and were runners-up. Teams and becoming stronger lower down the league now.

As for the money/sky/contracts all this malarky...

I think we may see one day a football league/football union thing like in rugby. One day there may be two codes of football

Great post.

But it was clearly better then.

The thing is, growing up, it was a cert Everton would win stuff, so I was spoilt on success, I do find it hard to get excited about finishing 5th, but I do realise how hard it is to do what we do.

Laughing at Damons comment about us "doing it without debt", somebody really needs to show that lad our accounts.
