Non League Football

Off to watch Thornton Cleveleys away at Squires Gate today in the NWCLFirst Division North.

Don’t usually go to away games but it’s only 6 miles away so a bit of a local area derby.

They drew last week in the opener 0-0 away at Darwen.

Saw Squires Gate last week against Maghull.

Had 2 proper attacks and scored two cracking goals. Got battered though and had it not been for a 96th minute equaliser; they'd have taken the 3 points somehow.

You’ve got Woolton in that league this season too mate. You going to go to any of their games?

Yeah - Woolton eventually got moved over, after initially being in the South.

3rd Maghull of the season. I only live 10 mins away.

I do Marine mostly, got a season ticket, so in a rare weekend im not at Everton or Marine, I'll pop down.

Nice, but basic set up. Played some great football last week.

I’m going to Marine, first time since they put the extra facilities in Crosender road. I went to Maghull last season, decent setup as you say.
Will probably get about 500-600 today.

New Stand is decent. Got a great view, but we've not bothered using it during Pre-Season.

Few other things in, but not quite ready. A step been removed on Jubilee side, so its easier to get down now.

Squires Gate 0 Thornton 2

Bit of a smash and grab if I’m honest. Gate played the better football but didn’t threaten too much.

Good 3 away points for Thornton.

Maghull 4 - 3 Droylsden

Maghull 4 up against 10 men. Droylsden got 3 back. Horrible fans. Step 6, and non stop "You scouse bastards" etc...

Had a word as had my 2 year old and they proceeded to kick off even further.

Great result for Maghull infront of a sun-kissed 310 attendance.

How was ir? Our groups less than happy with the performance
Cables got the better of you to be honest. The first half was pretty even, I missed our goal and Cables certainly dominated the second half but our goalie made a couple of good saves. Had a really interesting chat with one of your regulars about the pitfalls of moving up the ladder and ground regulations etc. makes you wonder if it’s worth it.

Some aspects... yes.
Its quite something to visit the Scunthorpe's, Chester's & Hereford's.

The increasing costs is less so. But when youve done the NPL for 40 years straight, you need something different. But it's rather non enjoyable going places and not being allowed a beer on the terrace, Merthyr on a Tuesday night.

Theres a lot of old guard Marine, who i genuinely think prefer the days of 300 a gate. If you want to be sustainable, you need to be as successful.

So despite the negatives, seeing the club from where it was when I started, to where we are in the current day, I wouldn't swap it for anything.
