I don't see your point at all. Anyone who knows the history here knows he did excellent at West Ham. He got glowing praises after doing so well with them his first season in the Prem. Arsenal and United were after him, but then WH started to play [Poor language removed] and he was made the scape goat.

If your idea of winning the arguement is by ignoring everything that was said and done until something that supports your view comes up, well done.

Yeah he briefly played right wing. So did Gardner. So did Petrov. So did Gabby. Don't see what that has to do with anything either. OPTA proves his ability and anyone who has followed him knows it's true.

Shock, horror, young English player at London club receiving good reports from the media. His own fans didn't quite see it that way, actually booing him and forcing him out their club. Interesting that.

Thats generally how one sustains their 'argument' - by supporting it.

Sound, great. Tony Hibbert had the best OPTA tackling record a few years back.

If he had a football brain and some dribbling ability he would be ace.

Only problem is that he rarely knows what to do with it when he reaches the box.

You summed up why I don't rate the lad - especially for £8.5m. Fingers crossed you keep him - last I read was O'Neil was trying to give him to Spurs as a deal for Huddlestone...

Media rates him, fans rates him, statistics rate him, captain.

You don't believe the media. You only believe the fans who he left behind. You don't believe the statistics.

Why bother. You are right.

You don't happen to be a woman?

I believe what I see when I watch Villa. He's not good enough. He would be a squad player at best for Everton and therefore he's not worth pursuing.

Jesus. Fans at West Ham clearly didn't rate him. Aston Villa fans don't rate him and Everton fans on this very thread, don't rate him.

What? Re statistics, your whole argument is OPTA stats showing he was the most effective tackler. Tony Hibbert had the exact same honour.

Hibbert, who was officially the most effective tackler in the Premiership last season according to OPTA Stats
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum: Hibbert signs new deal

I would sooner believe my own eyes having seen him play plenty of times.

Why bother. You are right.

I am. One more sexist comment and I'll ban you sunshine.

Figures :D

FWIW, most Villa fans I know rate him and want him to enter our midfield in a 4-5-1.

In his first two seasons he was excellent for West Ham, a real driving force for them. In his third (his last season?) he was booed and was very poor, like most of the West Ham side.

He's not a great player by any means, he lacks the natural ability to ever be a top level player but he has certain attributes we lack big time - strength, athleticism, pace and drive (when he's on song).

The attributes mentioned are what I think Moyes was looking to add by signing Stephane Mbia. Nigel Reo-coker could be a shorter, cheaper alternative.

Although saying all this I'd rather we went for a more creative midfielder, someone in the Arteta mould. I think we could cope with Rodwell and Neville as our more defensive minded midfielders for the time being.
