Next year's captain

The problem with your sarcastic quip is that Wayne Rooney has 10 league goals this season and has been arguably our best player this season.
No doubt and if it wasn't for his goals we would be in serious trouble. At the same time though his mindless lack of positional play at times has seriously cost us in certain games imo.

He's tried to take too much responsibility- no doubt.
Against WH, Leicester and Palace though he has shown what what he can do when we play a team which has a blend of energy, youth and quality around him.

He's doing aight this season yeah. But Allardyce clearly knows that, despite him being arguably most effective player currently, he cannot play consecutive games. Otherwise he'd be playing all the time. He'll be 34 half way through next season. Vice captain at best, for me.

I'd give it to Coleman, he deserves it. The vice captain needs to be younger, with a view to eventually becoming captain. I'm never keen on goalies getting the armband as I don't think they can influence the outfield properly, I'd consider making Holgate vice captain, seems to have a bit of attitude.

Absolutey none of that qualifies him to be captain. Coleman has been here far longer, has been a far better servant and knows the club and the dressing room a lot better than Rooney.

So being a winner over a long period of time isn't needed. But longevity within a club without winning anything is?

Also, with the huge influx of players, how many will be here in the summer, when said hypothetical decision will be made, who have been here for years? So how does he know the dressing room "a lot better" than Rooney?

Jags may be here. Maybe not.
Baines maybe.
Who else?

So it's clear Coleman doesn't know the dressing room a lot better than Rooney. But yes, he knows the canteen staff and the car parking attendants better. Is that the basis for your call of him knowing the club?

Because alternatively, if we are talking about being a "servant" or being at the club the longest, why take it off Jagielka and Baines?

With respect, you're all over the shop here.

Mate.

Jagielka = Knows club inside out, but is well and truly finished as a Premier League player
Baines = Knows club inside out, but is nowhere near standard to be starting for us next season

Coleman = Knows club inside out and is an exceptional player

Not difficult to see where the difference lie, is it?

What do you mean "knows the club"?

How long has he been here? How many years in total has Rooney been here?

and in respect of

Well i didn't exclusively say Jags and Baines should be kept on a general basis. I quite clearly said

So please, if you're going to debate, as i'd like you too as it's the the whole point of a forum, at least tackle the whole post rather than snipping out a line without the greater context.

Rooney's main knowledge of the club comes from the time he was sleeping with grandmothers. I wouldn't say he took an awful lot from his time here.

The only thing we need to know is Seamus is the only leader in the squad who is playing in his prime years.

Rooney may well be a leader, but he's finished as a top player on a week in week out basis, and will be even less effective next season as he becomes yet less mobile.

"Rooney can't play every week"- unfounded speculation. He's had no injuries this season, just a bout of flu.
He should be captain as he's the only winner we have in the squad. To remind you, he is England's and Man Utd's record goal scorer, has over 100 caps for England, won PL titles and the CL. It has to be Wayne Rooney.
Vice captain, I agree - Coleman.
Also, Gylfi Sigurdssen's best position is off the left.

Yeah but Coleman is boss whereas Rooney is a bit of a knob.

If we are being totally honest the captaincy doesn't mean much anyway. Its just an armband. The likes of Coleman will lead regardless of their status.
