Next Gen consoles - PS4/Xbox One

The only real promise that the Xbox One has at the moment is "The Cloud" and the possibility of dedicated servers being provided for most if not all multiplayer based titles. They'll have a lot of server beef behind the new XBL service.

Sony have confirmed cloud gaming for 2014, to be fair.

Absurd.

1.) Not every person who has a console is in a conventional household. I think Dylan for example mentioned soldiers playing games on duty, without the internet.
2.) What about unexpected down time? The internet isn't wholly reliable. When you move house as well, or go on holiday, you may be without it for a few weeks. Why should your very expensive piece of kit and game collection then become useless?
3.) Use a smartphone? Why the heck should people have to jump through hoops to play singleplayer games? That is absolutely ludicrous.

I'm sure that there will be a way to play offline. Its not like you need to be 24/7 connected - all it requires is a daily check-in.

At the moment people are reacting to this news with examples (many implausible) of worst-case scenarios, but I'm sure that there will be a way to play your games. It may involve jumping though a couple of extra hoops, but hey, like I said if you can't deal with it there's a rival platform pining for your attention. Microsoft aren't stupid. At least I'd hope they're not that stupid.

They have, but with 300,000+ servers to go with it? Not sure.

Hmmm, we'll see what difference it makes I guess. The PS4's more powerful out of the box though.

That said, the PS3 was more powerful than the 360 but you rarely saw the difference as most top games are multi-plat anyway.

Well I'm not sure, MS might be stupid. But if not, they're certainly arrogant and greedy. I'll be buying their rival platforms, but I'm pissed because I didn't want to. I like the 360 and wanted the new Xbox, but they've put me off it completely.

And a daily check in only fixes problems caused by a true always on connection like your internet going down for an hour or so. Thinking of other scenarios where you won't have the internet for over a day isn't implausible at all. Perhaps not for yourself, perhaps not even for me, but I know I'm not the only type of gamer out there.

And is it just me who finds the notion of a daily check in, all practicalities aside, absolutely abhorrent and Orwellian? I feel belittled and patronized as a customer when I'm told 'oh yeah, we'll take all your money for our stuff -- that's great -- but we're going to keep checking on you every day to make sure you're using like we want."

I've had both types of consoles before. If anything Sony is the better platform. I got a 360 because the ps3 was so expensive and to be fair to microsoft I didn't regret it.

But there's no way I'm letting them spy on me via kinect, prohibit me from using 2nd hand games or sign in every day to use my own content : fück me its like clocking on or something. It isn't a job you know.

So to people considering switching I say come on over. Normally I wouldn't care which way platform people decide. Its like macs vs pcs. I've a mac but I'm no evangelist. no fan boy. But this is different. This is about a company trying to screw its consumers over. And we need to fight back in the only language they understand. With our money.

I'm xbox 360, my friends are. If i decide to switch I need to convince them as well.

At the moment I'm not sure. The kinect looks good, my kid loves dance games, but do I really want it spying on me, measuring my heart rate, seeing if I look happy or sad while watching an advert/game/movie and then feeding that back to commercial companies?

Do I want it spying on my kids?, Do I want a hacker gaining access to it and listening to my conversations?. Do I want the feds busting in because I said something about the govt/tax's while in my own living room., hello thought police.

I do like streaming movies from my home PC/server via the xbox, so xbox one might be good for that, but with the whole DRM thing, is there any reason why they couldn't control what movies I stream and whether you have to purchase them from Xbox Live.

Skype would be good, is it on PS4?

Lots of questions. I would have just upgraded to Xbox One, no question. But now I need to do some homework on the PS4, media streaming from a PC to the PS4, Skype.

Battlefield 4 is on both, thats probably all I'll play anyway, so its just the media streaming that I need.

And does anyone know if they'll put Goodison in the latest FIFA on the next gen consoles?, haven't bothered buying a new version for years, they had it on the original playstation Fifa Stars FFS!

I want to play games not talk on Skype or watch Sky movies

Xbox has dropped some massive clanggers this week

after the xbox one reveal i thought this might be the time to change back to playstation but when i looked at the ps4 i saw no reason to change but it was still close between the 2. after watching the xbox one at e3 it has easily become me preferred choice because of the exclusives. the only playstation exclusive i was interested in was kingdom hearts 3 and apparently thats not even an exclusive any more.

pretty much the only thing that will make me change is if all my friends get a ps4 because it doesnt have 1 other thing im interested in

Might get myself a PS4, I have an Xbox at the moment. But I don't like the price of the xbox, and how we have to have the Kinect this time, so we're paying extra for something we don't need. I like to share my games with my family and its seems I can will be able to do this on the playstation plus I will be able to play all the classics I've miss on the playstation such as Heavy Rain, The Last of us and Little big planet.

Another plus for me in switching to PS4 would be access to the old PS3 catalogue as PS4 will have backwards compatibility. XB1 won't be compatible (and as an XB360 owner already there's no advantage to me).

Even as a 360 owner I'll say that PS3 has some cracking exclusives, especially the Uncharted games.

Just to confirm my knowledge on this .
That means my PS3 games will work on PS4 yeah?

Not quite that simple unfortunately. At launch there will be no backwards compatibility. However next year they will be launching a service that allows it. There's not a lot of details, so so far we don't think think it'll be as easy as popping a disc in and playing as it doesn't have the chipset to run those games.

It is a cloud based service so you would be streaming the game from a server. The hope is that you won't have to repurchase games you own and that just popping your copy in will give you access to that game, but who knows

I would imagine that the PS4 won't be backward compatible due to the change in architecture (CEL to x86). Much like the Xbox One isn't supposed to be.

However, with emulation, it is very possible, but as anyone who has ran emulated games knows, there are sometimes 'glitches' that have to be overcome. And the best part is the glitches will be different for different titles.

In short, it is definitely possible, but I would imagine it won't happen unless it can be done properly (ie, not at launch, but added in later in an OS update)
