Interesting, not many intellectual footballers. I know Andy Hinchcliffe was one, but he never tried management as far as I know.

…he did A Levels whilst at Everton and had the possibility of studying medicine like his sister. I think getting top A Level grades when you’re already a big earning professional requires some dedication and application. He was very highly thought of at Everton and clearly that’s still the case at Shrewsbury where his teammates have voted him their player of the year.

The best managers are rarely the best players, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pennington takes his badges and goes down that route.
