...men in Everton die about eight years earlier than the average in England.

I'm not from Liverpool but I lived in Hull for 9 years and that is consistently voted the crappest place in England, so I know how it feels to be featured in news articles like this.

But is Everton really that bad, surely it's not all drug problems, no jobs & bad schools? What say you, the locals?

A historical, successful and vibrant local football club can only help so much...what else can be done to help the area? Mostly we outsiders see articles celebrating Liverpool as a capital of culture...are there interesting cultural scenes developing in Everton? Music is well known to thrive well in depressed areas. Remember when punk & rave first hit? They were very working class scenes, born from a general lack of opportunity, and have long since proven to be hugely important cultural movements, transcending even Britain itself. Maybe amongst the negativity there are hungry young people starting something.

My respect and best wishes to the good people of Everton, I hope this article doesn't reflect the whole reality.

There's loads of abandoned houses around the ground which doesn't look great. I've heard everton valley isn't the best but whaddo I know I guess.

When I was young my dad used to tell me that cats have to walk around in twos at night around everton, and I was like :o really?!

Everton's grim like. The district, that is. It's also grim that the area around the ground is possibly the roughest in the city. We must look like bad scruffs to opposition fans.*

*Most of my family live in Anfield, I can say that.

I come from the area around the ground(walton). And I am an extremely proud scouser. Most of my family come from city centre, everton and Norris green. It may not be pretty, but it's where I call home and yes it may seem rough but that doesn't mean the residents are unsavoury. Sorry if I come across a little touchy on this one peeps.

Rough, no rougher than Walton or Anfield. I've lived in all three. Everton does have a higher firearm count though. Significantly.
