The Met is suggested donation so you can get in for a dollar if you like
And if you actually did that you'd get the stare of death from the the ticket attendant - you don't take the pish like that in America. We gave about 20 dollars for the MET, $40 for the Natural History Museum
Some other stuff I'd recommend to anyone new to the city (got family from there):
Katz Deli or Carnegie Deli - for those piled high pastrami sandwiches New York is famous for
Museum of Sex - put simply a museum that explores the history of pornography and the way sex is portrayed. Very graphic. One of New York's hidden gems
Top of the Rock - this is the alternative to the Empire State Building, less touristy. Better views of the city in a lot of people's opinion
Brooklyn Bridge - very famous, you'll see loads of padlocks attached to the side left by lovers
The High Line - a former railroad that was turned into a park, beautiful in the summer
Central Park - where numerous films have been shot, including friends. Again, beautiful in the summer for a wander
Greenwich/Soho - this is the trendy part of New York City, go here for walk about to get a real feel of what the city is all about. Have a drink, take some photos/selfies. There's plenty to see and do here
5th Avenue - posh shopping district, nice for a bit of window shopping
The Intrepid - former aircraft carrier and collection of war ships, must see for any war/history enthusiast
Enjoy
