Me and the Wife going on Holiday to New York for the first time

The Travel agent has put us on to passes that you can buy prior to the holiday to see attractions etc

Anyone any experience of them are they worth taking out and are they good value. Or are we just as well getting there and doing our own thing

Any advice appreciated

The ones we have been put on to are

New York pass

New York Explorer pass

New York City pass

Cheers

The hop on and hop off passes are good. You can get them off street sellers in Times Square, don't take their first offer. Always barter the prices.

So do you reckon we are better getting them when we are there mate ??

Yes the bus Tour passes yeah, the specific site seeing ones may be different you have been offered, but we got varying prices in Times Square. Look out for the sellers, they have passes around their necks and dress in red. They will approach you and make you an offer.

When you say NY, you mean Manhattan?

I would also recommend the bus tours,we got a three day pass which we found great value, three routes as I remember, one for lower Manhattan, one for Central Park and Bronx.the third one was, as I remember the eastern part of Manhattan. It included a boat trip to Statue of Liberty & Ellis island and also a separate cruise down the Hudson River.

I don't recommend the NY City Pass - you'll end up spending about $100 each and think you'll have to do this, do that to make it worthwhile. Just do 2-3 attractions and get on with it. Best value is Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The rest, well.. inside the ESB is nothing special (obviously the view from the top is good).

I also had more fun in Central Park (free) and on the Subway..

The hop on-hop off bus tours are fantastic. I've done them in a few cities around the world but NY is the only one that have actual guides talking as you go round and each guide puts their own personality into it. All the others have been pre-recorded.

If your hotel's got a concierge they'll probably have some deals on stuff. I reckon buying through the travel agent would be more expensive.

they are good but it's all the hopping that gets me, hopping on isn't too bad, but when you're trying to hop off you need to be very very careful, and make sure the vehicle isn't moving either, that's important.

We didn't get a pass, we made our own way round the city. Perhaps we should've got a pass, but I'm glad we explored on our own.

Did the Empire State Building and ground zero, and all the usual, but also found some pretty cool "off the beaten track" stuff too.

@Morag still wants to be there. Too far to walk to the match from there for me, otherwise great.

I was in New York 2 weeks ago with the missus. We didn't buy any passes before we went. Was there for 3 days and saw most stuff...go to Empire State first thing in the morning and the waiting time was minimal, girl on the desk even refused to sell us queue jumper tickets as wait was only 20 mins...don't bother with paying for Statue of Liberty boat tour, get Staten Island Ferry (free) which sails right past and gives boss views of Manhattan...I recommend 9/11 museum, again go early in morning and buy tickets for later in the day...and if your missus wants to see a show in Broadway, go to a place called TKTS on Broadway, queue from 2ish and at 3pm they release tickets for that night's shows 40/50% off. Last tip...go to see Rocky - The Musical!!
