We have a big museum mate.... Been there years.

Honestly, that's a valid point. And I can see why you might not want this kind of reminder at a football stadium.
But putting all this history in a museum makes it all very comfortable and easy to avoid.
Also, If I'm not mistaken, they propose putting this in the pump house which will be a.... museum.

We already know the history of the docks and have recognised this as a City...years ago.

5 or 10 years ago nobody was pulling down statues of slave traders.Thats why the club are doing it.

Imo of course.

No one was pulling them down 100 years ago either. Things change. Views evolve. Not always but frequently for the better - as in this case.
