A new professional football academy linked to English premier league club Everton will be based at Lincoln University.

The Asia Pacific Football Academy (APFA) will kick off in February. Facilities will initially include an exclusive training and match pitch, changing and recovery rooms, office space and the use of the indoor arena, with full access to the university's recreation facility.

Lincoln University will also provide sports science and conditioning support.

"The university is a fantastic complex with a long-established elite sporting presence," APFA director Rob Sherman said.

"We are delighted to be based here, as it will provide a perfect environment for our young players."

Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor Roger Field said APFA would "add to our sporting pedigree", which included the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre.

"Their presence and support will certainly enhance the university's football reputation," Field said.

Sherman said the APFA players, who would be on scholarships, would receive their education at Lincoln High School.

Lincoln High principal Linda Tame said the school prided itself on its community and placed great value on the importance of conversations and relationships.

"In our talks with APFA, it was evident that they also share a philosophy of lifelong learning and social development and we are delighted to be working with them."

APFA intends to recruit about 12 players, aged 15 or 16, for its first year.

Sherman has said it will eventually cater for players aged 14 to 18.

At least three New Zealand football players will be offered free scholarships for New Zealand's first comprehensive player-development programme with a direct pathway to an English Premier League (EPL) club.

Definitely looking to the future our Davey
