if we ever get a keeper that matches big nev then we will win the p.l., c.l. and all the rest thats put in front of us. if he'd not been welsh and got to play on the higher stages that he deserved (euro cup as well) then he would be spoken about in the same breath as yashin etc. and schmeichael wouldnt.

fact.

Yeah, Nev was supreme, the best goalkeeper in the world at one time. Howard is a very steady goalkeeper but it would take something special for him to be talked about in the same breath in terms of talent. Southall was the best in my opinion and we have had some great keepers over the years. Many may say Ted Sagar was better than Southall but i was not around at that time and always regard Nev the best keeper the club has ever had.

This is the most stupid poll I've ever seen, Southall was the best keeper of his generation & 1 of the main reasons we had so much success in the 80s

Big Nev.
No one laces his boots.
Still looks the part in charity games, with a bit of meat on him as extra cover, to make the goal look smaller!

As I am an "old timer" I would actually place Gordon West above Martyn and thus second only to Big Nev.

Albert Dunlop wasn't bad either.

My dad saw Sagar many times . . .

. . . and told me that not only was Neville Southall better than him, Big Nev was possibly the second-best keeper he had ever seen. Granted they didn't see much of foreign keepers in those days. (Though we did stand together and see Yashin let a howler through in 1966 at the Park End)

He told me Frank Swift of Arsenal and England was the best keeper he'd ever seen - by a mile. Yes, later the journalist who died in the Munich crash.
