Player Valuation: £1.5m
With rumors that geri is going and that cleverley has gone with the potential to shift niasse aswell it looks like we will end up with a negative net spend from the january transfer window.

However i dont see this as a negative. To be fair koeman has reshaped the squad he inherited to a side that will cruise to 7th and had we not had some bad injuries could have pushed higher. We havent touched the war chest he was promised and will have european football and a new stadium on the way come the summer.
Hopefully this will mean a big summer ahead with 4 or 5 top players brought in that should push us to the next level.

We probably need a few more than 4 or 5 to be honest. The centre of defence is a major concern, as I wouldn't say any of the current players can be relied upon long-term. We could need 2 or 3 players there alone, depending on just what shape Galloway comes back in and whether RK fancies him. The wide areas are also an issue, as we've relied a lot on the young lads, and have little depth at full-back, so that might be another 3-4 players, and then of course you've got the back-up options we have up front, which are pretty weak at the moment.

With Europe hopefully in the bag, we'll have more games next year, and the squad is pretty lean already, so I think it's a huge summer ahead in terms of both quality and quantity, and that's assuming that both Rom and Ross stay, which can hardly be guaranteed.

You'll get wildly differing views on the significance of net spend here.

Personally, from window-to-window I don't think it counts for much and is not what I look to to see how well the board are doing in supporting the manager.

But, it does carry weight over a period of years. The teams above us are, by and large, in that position because they consistently spend more. It is difficult but not impossible to bridge the gap.

Spurs (again) are a good example of a very prudent scouting and buy/sell policy. I don't know off-hand their net spend since Pochettino took over but I don't think it's huge. Their stadium development will have had a big bearing on that as they seemed to always be buying players under AVB, Redknapp, and Martin Jol.

What I consider important is getting as close as possible to a complete squad of 22/23 using the resources available. Even the elite sides don't have top quality in each and every position with adequate backup, but on they whole, they are stronger than us in most areas when comparing starting XI's and squads.

As it stands, I think we need 5-6 signings in the summer to cope with EL and make us more competitive relative to sides above us. I am greedy and would like even more but I don't think its realistic or even possible to do more in a single window. Asking for 6 new signings all ready for the first team from the off is a big demand. I hope they are up to it.

Not every player that leaves requires a direct replacement but if we lost Lukaku and Barkley, then they obviously would. We have to get more used to selling at big profit as it will be an indispensible part of the business model for the foreseeable future.

Negative net spend is a GOOD thing.
In any business surely, looking at your waning assets and selling at their peak worth - replacing with newer, cheaper, long-term additions - is what we should want to be doing.
If you want pay more out than you bring in from transfers, other aspects of your business have to cover the expenditure. For us it's commercial / global income. We don't have those facilities currently and our global pull isn't there.
I don't want to do a Portsmouth - owner comes in, throws loads of money at it, short term success but can't ever make back the huge money he's put in.
If we sell Lukaku (not a waning asset but someone who wants to leave) for £70 / 80 million and bring in a more suitable player (another debate entirely) for £50 million then that has to be considered quality business, surely?

Totally agree

With Cleverly gone and Geri Naisse Lennon Besic Jags and a couple more probably all on the exit list , major investment will be needed.
RK has stated that this window ( his third ) will be the one he will be judged on.
Walsh has had 12 months to get his ducks in a row and targets identified.
Talk is a new chief executive from BPBis lined up as well.
Money from Finch farm is there , Money from Sky , Money not spent this season ( Sissoko 30 million ) Moshiri's money and other cash to be spent.
This window will be a watershed in our clubs history
If Koeman and Walsh get it right then we are contenders, if not it's a lost opportunity
Arsenal are in disarray , Spurs can't spend big with new stadium
Jose has a serious rebuilding job on
City and the loft extension dwellers need new defences as do we.
We need to get our business done early to show our intent.
No waiting till deadline day to save 3 months wages , those days are behind us.
Win and we will win big time , fail and we will still be the best of the rest which is not good enough.

It's all set up for a summer of Mosh firing millions upon millions of fresh green dollar dollar bills out of a cannon and into the faces of every club and agent with a player worth having.

Yet I still can't shake the feeling that it won't happen and we'll have another frustratingly anticlimactic window.
