You dont learn at FF, you learn in game on a competitive match day.

And in answer to your other question: Coleman is far from decrepit. He's just put in three 90 minute performances in 8 days.
Players always say that they learn a lot from the managers and coaches, they often thank them for improving their game, this is at training, mate, not during the game

I wouldn't see that as a reason to take the foot off the gas. Lampard will want to get as many points as possible and would more likely send Patterson out on loan next season.

That's my hope, tbf. People think I have something against him, but I openly acknowledge he is fine attacking-wise but is nowhere at the races defensively. I think his managers here so far see that.

Coleman went out to Blackpool and added defending to his game. Patterson cant learn on the job here either. He simply has to drop down a level next season.
I’d rather he stayed and learnt from the coaches here, especially Cole and baines.

So who’s RB next season for you, because if you want patterson on loan, surely we can’t have Coleman and Kenny

I dont see why not. A 35 year old captain and a 24 year old stand in.

We have priorities elsewhere.

If it were down to me we'd have bought Spence rather than Patterson and we wouldn't be having the debate.

You’re getting blinkered off the back of a few games. Maybe Kenny at 24 improves under lampard and really raises his game. But you can count on one hand how many good games he’s had in 5yrs.

And Coleman has had a really poor season and was part of the defence that crumbled v Newcastle. Huge gamble going into next season with them 2

I think the RB situation is going to dominate the summer discussion as it has the last few years. The best case scenario will be; Kenny gone on a free with our best wishes, Patterson has a run of games later this season and stands out and therefore goes into next season as our #1 RB. Coleman has one more year left so he will be staying regardless and his captaincy and mentoring of Patterson will be beneficial. There's no Europe so Coleman and relieve when needed / cups. Of course us being us, Patterson gets inquired the day after the summer window closes and we have Coleman / Holgate as our RB until January.

With the mentors available to them, these young fullbacks are in the perfect place to develop into top class players. I certainly wouldn't bet against them both becoming key players for us in the future.

The transition from the established old guard to the new is always tricky, especially with these lads being as young as they are. I'd rather we took this route than say, the Newcastle route of signing old established players on big wages. Trippier is a good player now, but in a couple of years when he's in his mid thirties and still pulling north of 150k per week, I'm sure we will be glad of our young fullbacks.
Yep, we have done more than enough of big long contracts to players who will not usefully see them out.

Mad one but I think Kenny deserves a new 2 year contract.

Low wages and a squad filler based on his last few performances it’s a no brainier.

I would hope Kenny maintains a good level. Him and Patterson competing for the position, Seamus when an injury leaves nobody on the bench for the right.

Comments that are completely at odds with what this new manager has said only days ago.

Lampard established the hierarchy for RB last Friday afternoon. The following days events will have cemented those views.

He went out on loan himself to Swansea from West Ham, so he knows that's a good route for a young player to take, and I expect that to happen to Patterson this summer.

My feeling is if you think we need Kenny then buy an upgrade that is really pushing for a starting position. You will have 3 then with Coleman for next season and not have to rely on him. If not then lets not be hamstrung with a squad filler who we dont want to play. Let him move on, play week in week out somewhere, and let us buy a new RB when Coleman retires that is really competing - or if you like buy in the summer and have 3 for the season. We just cannot go on with poor RB options for the next 2 years.

As long as you have the inside track Dave I shall not comment. Keep us informed.
