My Fiance Doesn't Know What Fawlty Towers Is...

Many of our old shows can be found on G.O.L.D. Porridge, Open All Hours etc. Steptoe and Son must be up there with the best, one of my favourites. One thing I have noticed , is that most of our top comedies were written by one person..( One Foot in the Grave ) or a duo ( Steptoe and Son ). Many US sitcoms seem to have a script writing team larger than the cast list ( Friends ). Maybe it's because of a different outlook on comedy. Or our we just better at it ?

The best comedy of all time is The Simpsons and it is ridiculous to even try and argue against it for so many reasons.

During its pomp from about 1991 to 1996, week in, week out, it will never be beaten.

However, my personal favourites are I'm Alan Partridge and Frasier.

Sorry mate, but the best comedies know when to end.

Agreed, The Simpsons has been dragging on for AT LEAST a decade too long now...

...However, just cause I think Let It Be is [Poor language removed] doesn't mean that The Beatles shouldn't be named the greatest band around, similar case here.

Mate, one album versus half of a show's 20 year run? Seriously?

The Simpsons has killed all the love I had for it. Just like Family Guy's done too, although FG was never nearly as smart.

Re Simpsons, I think it's the series with the X Files, Stonecutters epsidoes etc that has me in tears throughout, fantastic fantastic comedy. But I don't enjoy anything done this decade.

Fcuk new episodes man, alls i'm saying is that the sheer quality of pretty much every episode over a 6/7 year stretch is enough to put it right at the top for me.

You might aswell say "Everton have killed everything I love about them" because of how gash they've been for the past 18 months, come on.

Never heard of it..

I thought Home Improvement was a great show, they dragged it on a few years to many as well..

I love many of the greats.

Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Gilligans Island, Seinfeld on the US side.

Monty Python, Two Ronnies, Fawlty Towers, Dads Army, Fools & Horses , Alan Partridge on the Brit side.

Fawlty towers. I go on xbox live and it's suprising the amount of Americans who have never heard of it. They usually call me Baysil.

Not me brother. One of the great comedy series of all time. To be fair though, I'm old enough to remember it the first time around and I was a huge Monty Python fan, so anything involving one of the Pythons had my interest.

The other classic British sitcom that I loved was "Yes, Minister".

This is true and beyond discussion. The Simpsons during that period, and Seinfeld are so far above anything else US TV has ever produced. There have been lots of "good" shows. Fewer "above average". Those two are just genius.

I think saying any single show is the best, and that arguing otherwise is "ridiculous" or that it's "beyond discussion" is an incredibly arrogant and ignorant thing to say.

I watch a metric [Poor language removed] ton of TV, and the Simpsons doesn't come close to some of the quality programming I've seen. Comedy-wise, seeing as this is a comedy TV thread, the Simpsons in its prime is definitely right up there. I won't argue that, as it was funny, double-layered, smart and entertaining for everyone; young or old. But I've seen plenty of comedies I've preferred, and/or thought were of a higher quality. In fact, I don't even think the Simpsons was the best show Groening created; I always preferred Futurama. But to each their own :)

I don't say stuff like that like my opinion is better than yours, I say it in an educated kinda way i.e. Look at how a show like The Simpsons has completely impacted upon modern society, look at it's influence on so many other shows, not just cartoons...Stuff like that.

Those exact reasons are why you can legitmately justify The Beatles as being the most important musical act since Bach, Beethoven & Mozart. Sometimes things can just transend opinion, which is why I split my original answer into two parts, what I thought was the best, and what I thought were my favourites.

I love Everton more than most things, but i'm not gonna try and argue that they're a better team than Barcelona, it's a pretty fruitless task.
