My fear going forward - what about the youth?

The fact cleverly is getting in ahead of Davies is probably a clear sign that either Davies isn't as good as cleverly which is worrying. Very worrying.

Or Koeman is simply being stubborn

There are far to many players in the first team approaching or passing 30 with no replacement in line or ambition being shown to replace them with better quality. We will not win the league nor get any closer to the top four by resigning our older players on new contracts when these players are not good enough in the first place

So, Holgate starts today and Davies comes off the bench for twenty minutes.

Maybe Koeman isn't as anti-youth as it might have appeared from listening to what some Soton fans had to say ?

I thinks it's been a case of needs must as well WB. Probably players who he thought he could depend on have either a) turned out crap b) injured. So in the end the likes of Calvert Lewin, Holgate, Davies are finally getting some minutes. Great to see Kenny on the bench as well and being in and around the squad.

It's vitally important that there's a pathway for these lads to the first team because it's why the likes of Stones, Galloway, Holgate sign if they know there is a path to the 1st team and we are producing young lads for the squad.

Looks like Lookman from Charlton will be the next in line.

I think it's the old adage about "If they're good enough, then they're old enough" and then they'll play.

By dropping Jags and Barry ( who probably wouldn't have started if McCarthy was fit ) in the last few weeks, I think Koeman has shown he's not afraid to make tough decisions, and sometimes those decisions will give a youngster a chance.

The January window may change the pecking order for some of those youngsters a bit though, so a bit of patience all round will likely still be needed.

I'm hoping that once we've brought in some ( hopefully) real quality, we can replace the likes of Cleverley who are taking a place on the bench with another youngster. So let's say we got Schneiderlin in, Davies would replace Cleverleys spot on the bench and get some game time. We would then see a a gradual phasing out of Barry, same for Jagielka etc. Important to have experience but not to the detriment of the team.

I said in the match day thread WB I think Koeman has under performed massively imo. Maybe that's harsh and what he's done is under estimate what was required and what we want. It's only the last 3/4 games I feel he's started to be a bit more flexible and that was due to being on such a bad run.

BUT..glad to see him trying to integrate them and at least mixing the team up a little.

This doesn't really belong here, but, realistically, our squad is a top eight squad, and we're sat seventh ( admittedly Soton have a game in hand ).

Koeman hasn't set the world on fire, but he's steadied the ship a bit.

Agree with you on changing the squad around a bit. See my prev. post on Cleverley too.

The route to the first team must always be a priority.
