Music Is Officially Dead

Minaj and that Swagger Jagger are awful. Not just 'pop music for kids' bad, but actually terrible terrible music. There's a world of difference between what they put out and decent 'pop' music (like 1D!! :o ).

Personally I think the charts/pop music are the best they've been since I have followed them, in that, while there is unavoidably some rubbish there, and the stuff that is made for the teenyboppers, there is also a much wider variety of music, and a wider acceptance of different genres which wouldn't have got airtime 10 or 20 years ago. Things like Mumford and Sons etc would never have got played on the radio when I was young.

Actually I reckon they would have. Oasis and Blur did.

Oh and BLF that brings up a whole other annoyance. Girls that like Chris Brown and say it wasnt his fault. Koff. I hate anyone that likes Chris Brown. If he'd have hit her once, then it's bad but it's forgiveable over time, but he didnt hit her once, he absolutely battered her.

She's a tit for getting back with him, but then again she is a tit anyway. Yeah you'd give her one but she's just a ****. 'Come on rude boy boy, can you get it up?' Are ya kidding me? Songs about sex are fine but ffs have some subtlety! It's just ridiculous otherwise. Very little talent, can carry a tune but is not an amazing singer live. She's basically famous for DAT ASS. Winds me up.

That's the problem right there.

Plenty of artists throughout history have been performers only, recording songs written by other people - Elvis, Sinatra etc...

Bon Iver is so beautiful.

^So much more enjoyable than a song that clearly copies the tune from "Oh My Darling".

That track is pretty good.

IJJYSMITH

I sort of agree. Obviously this was a stupid thing for him to say but you can see where he is coming from.

My hatred for One Direction knows no bounds.

Guilty secret: I actually like One D (as their fans call them :o). I mean really like. Wtf is wrong with me!! :o

Catfood isn't rammed down your throat during the course of everyday life though; pop music is. I also think it's harmful to society - young people aspire to be shallow idiots these days thanks to the celeb culture in the media, actively promoted by Cowell and co. It used to be that you learned an instrument or became really good at singing - nowadays it's how good you look or the best way to act like a t*t and get publicity.

Look at Geordie Shore, Desperate Scousewives etc. - they're popular, they're apparently entertaining, so should we all just be happy to let our kids watch it and have role models like that?

Tbf most of this isn't a recent phenonemem. It's just magnified due to our celebrity centric culture nowadays, but manufactured pop acts who can't play any musical instruments have been around since The Beach Boys.

Right on there mate.

I'll have a proper rant a bit later when I'm at a PC but the thing I hate the absolute most about pop/chart music is the complete disregard for responsibility. I mean just look at Rihanna singing "come on rude boy can you get it up, come on rude boy is you big enough?", her fans are by in large teenage girls and infact my ex told me that her little sister (aged 13) was walking round singing it the other day. Is that right? Far from it in my opinion.

Look at those monstrosities that Cowell has created in JLS and One Direction. JLS, again, have a very large fan base of teenage girls, and yet they have their own range of condoms. Is this right? Is it [Poor language removed]! It's utterly disgraceful that these "stars" will stoop so low just to make money.

Just listen to the lyrics of some of these chart songs and have a think at who they are aimed at and how they are brain washing children. An awful lot of them are about sex/drugs, totally glamorising it. Social networking in my opinion also has an awful lot of blame to carry, and the two go hand in hand, with people "following" their favourite "celebrities", following their every move, looking up to them as role models.

Not a very well constructed rant but there you go. (A lot of) Chart music is evil.

Likewise. You think that morally suspect and sexually inappropriate pop lyrics are anything new? FFS in the 80s Sabrina got away with practically falling out of here bikini in her Boys Boys Boys video. As for the JLS condoms, I actually think that's a good thing. You think young kids/girls don't know about sex?? At least they're out there promoting safe sex, which is a massive issue with teens atm.

I don't mind Cowell.

He is insanely good at what he does. Can't have a go at him for that. And he's a smarmy tit. Like that.

I like him, purely on the basis that he always fights with Louis Walsh, who is about the biggest pr*ck I have ever had the misfortune to witness on tv. I seriously hate that massive bell.

I wasn't convinced buy this thread title if I'm honest, but then I came across this.

Apples and oranges. Blur/Oasis were part of a massive scene that took over pop music for a good part of the 90s, and their music is much more 'mainstream' than Mumford, or something like Alt-J, who are also getting a lot of airplay atm.

Coming back to One Direction, they're a band that are aimed predominantly at teenage girls, yet, whether it be tv, radio or magazines, they talk about their sex lives. That Harry one is only 17 yet he's seen as a "lothario" now. You're right, the world is changing, and bands like this are glamorising these changes.

It's something I feel very strongly about. I feel that chart music and this celebrity culture is brain washing kids. You only need to look at kids these days, look at how they dress, they're conscious about their appearance from such an early age.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you - Elvis Presley!!

Cheers mate! ;)

To be fair I can't really comment too much on stuff regarding the 80's, as I wasn't born until '87, but I take your point. Although I'm sure there were plenty of sexual references in the times you're talking about, I seriously doubt they were anywhere near as crude or crass as they are now. The main difference now is the celebrity culture, kids are looking up to these people as idols, role models etc... they can follow their every move, they're copying them more. Whilst I don't think just because you're a pop star that you should behave impeccably every day of your life, they should take more responsibility, it's a small price to pay for the millions that these artists earn surely? They're in the public eye more than ever now. Football players are just as bad in many ways, but that's for another thread.

That's unreal, is he that much of a superstar that he is exempt from criticism even in such a cowardly, brutal attack? Yes you're right, personally I would never even dream of laying a finger on a girl in malice, but there is still a massive difference between one hit and filling someone in, her face was a right mess afterwards. Sorry, her face was even more of a mess afterwards. And you've just kind of proved my point, obviously some girls DO think that what he did wasn't that bad, it's scary really.

Yeah I'd give her one but I honestly don't think she's that attractive, a nice body but anyone who would put her in their top 5 or so needs to go outside. That rude boy song infuriated me when it first came out, probably a bit of an overreaction but you can't tell me that's the same as what bands/artists in the 80's did.

Phil I'm not going to quote you but I do see your point.

Yet you are forgetting the fact that even during the 80's, sexuality was still a very taboo subject. The 80's sexuality in the Media was like teenagers fumbling around in the dark.

Have a look at Wild Orchid, 9 1/2 Weeks, or Blue Lagoon. But watch it now and that stuff is so tame and dated compared to anything today. Musically, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper were the Female Pop Poster girls, and you can't honestly compare anything they produced in this time as degrading as they produce now.

Comparing them can be done, but the sexual awareness of a Teen in the any other generation pales in comparison to the stuff floating around today.

Actually I was going to move onto that in my next post, and in response to BLF: the things artists do and sing about seem more shocking now as the 'base sexuality', if you like, of society in general and young kids in particular is higher now. Taken out of context they seem really bad, I think that relative to what goes on everday in our lives now, that it's no different to Elvis's hips and legs being censored back in the 60s!

Yeah Phils right.

For as long as i can remember people have complained about sexuality in popular culture, it started at its base point (probably late 50s/early 60s i'd guess) with the advent of radio and TV, and with every generation its been complained about but then said to be worse with every subsequent generation.

Of course you're not wrong to say its a bad thing, society is ****ed quite simply. But its not because Rihanna sings about cocks, Rihanna sings about cocks because society is ****ed. And society is ****ed because unfortunatly thats the result of human beings being what they are.

No one could have stopped it, Mary Whitehouse couldn't have stopped it and no one now can stop it without pretty much everyone all making a conscious effort to do so. And thats simply not going to happen.

Reminds me of when John Leslie said it wouldn't be long before **** gets said on Blue Peter. Not happened yet i don't think but its a lot more likely now than it was 40 years ago.

Is it the natural evolution of Society? The age of Sexual Extremism? Food for thought.

The US and UK do produce 99% of this kind of material though i reckon.
