“I used to always start seasons really well and not finish them that good, but the reverse isn’t ideal,” said the Everton manager. “But if you finish the season stronger, then you tend to have a better chance of winning things, although you can be knocked out earlier if you don’t get up and running. The key is to be consistent throughout the season, and we’ve shown ourselves capable of doing that in the last few years.

“The situation we are in, there is a danger that if we drop too many points at this stage we won’t be able to catch up later on in the season. But the tightness of the Premier League has meant we aren’t a million miles away. We know we aren’t at the standard that we want, but we aren’t a million miles away. But know we have to do better. We have to start winning games.”

“We know we have to get better. If Villa are going for the top four, and you’d have to say they have a chance as they are a good team, then on this evidence Everton are not that far behind. That was the case in the last couple of seasons. We are better than where we are at the moment, and hopefully we can move up the table.”
But the manager admits the availability of more players will leave him with a different kind of selection poser. He said: “If we get the squad fit then we’ll have some decisions to make.

“We don’t have that at the moment.

“The hardest part for us right now is that we are playing people out of position. Tim Cahill is not a wide player, but he has to play out there, or we have to put young Dan Gosling in again.

“We have tried to get a formation that gives us the best chance of winning games. We lined up in a way so not to concede, and we should have capitalised more in the first half before we got sloppy for Villa’s equaliser and they got stronger.”

Moyes had no qualms with Bilyaletdinov’s red card but admits Cuellar was unfortunate to be dismissed.

“I have seen challenges like Billy’s given a red so I have to accept it,” he said. “There is a possibility it was a red.

“I thought it was harsh on Aston Villa even though the boy had two or three fouls after his first booking but I think the refacted after the Billy challenge."

Lets face it we should have a higher points total then we do now, we need a really good period between now and Xmas to get points on the board to be in with a shout of challenging for Europe. For me we need a mininmum of 25 points before xmas and have a really good second half to the season. All fit i thought we had a realistic chance of a top 4, i cant see it now with our points total and with some of the games we have lost and drew.

The top 6 is possible and many of our rivals have begun to hit the wall in terms of consistency: City have begun to win less games, Villa have shown inconsistency against the hard to break down sides, while Spurs are capable of winning but also looseing well and are facing into a central defender crisis. Sunderland are doing really well and have to be considered i think it may be a year to early for them though.

With room for play to improve where other teams have been playing at full tilt we have it in us to push on. If we can lessen the lead Spurs, Villa, City, Liverpool, and Sunderland have on us by the New Year to two or three points i will be happy - at the mo i think its the best we can hope for and to do it we will prob have to take a few scalps along the way between now and xmas. looking at the fixtures.

What do people think - are we still on for Top 6 - CL - or just a top 10 this season?

Personally ill go for top 6.

I can still see us getting a top six place. Depends on us not getting any more injuries, but it's possible given how close everyone is at the moment.

The intriguing thought at the moment is if we do end up in the top six, will that leave us above our dear friends across the park? On their form and with their present lack of leadership, could we? Too early, but ..... COYB.

I think personally you could see the team were starting to gel a bit better last weekend. The sudden brain lapses are still problems though, anyways im predicting us to come out of this rut and step it on up. Top 6 nailed on.

To be able to catch up we need to win against teams like spurs, city, chelsea, manu, red [Poor language removed] and a few others. Not draw but win, I'm being realistic, top half for me.

Forget the league. We haven't even played that many (on paper) tough teams yet. Won't finish better than 8th imho, but more realistically I think 9th-10th. We have slipped back.

I think getting Joey Obo back could turn things around a bit for us. He was looking pretty solid before his injury so if he and Distin can strike up a good partnership it should stop us conceding silly goals.

It also means Heitinga can take a bit of the pressure off Rodders who is starting to fade a bit. Hes still only 18 so a long hard season like the one were having might be a bit too much too soon.

I reckon we can get top 8 at least. Spurs have the potential to do a Villa and collapse in the second half of the season. Man Citys gazzillion pound strike force havent been scoring as many goals as they should be and it only takes one stroppy little brazilian to come back from injury and upset the team when he throws his toys out of the pram when he cant get in the team because of a stroppy little welshman. The other teams above us will keep beating each other so when our big boys start playing again our consistency should help us catch up.

Going slightly OT here but ive just read Moyseys interview in the November issue of 442 and one little bit stood out for me. The interviewer bumped into Distin on the way in who said "he wouldnt be staying for voluntary training in the afternoons - as he did at former club Portsmouth - because the morning sessions here are exhausting enough". Could this be at least part of the reason behind our long injury list? Clearly its important to have players who can run for 90 minutes or more but if they cant run for 90 seconds without getting an injury that keeps them out for months at a time perhaps they could be overdoing it. Moyes is a hard working manager who expects his players to sweat blood for the team but maybe in his desire to push on and get even more out of his players than theyve got hes running them into the ground.

Would love to see a Top 6 finish but unless Everton catch fire, mid-table finish is likely.

Given the way this season started, I'd be content with a top 10 finish and a good, long run in the Europa league. Think it will take Moyes a bit of time even after everyone's fit to figure out how to use his options to their full advantage.

League

I think if we finish between 9th and 6th we will be doing well. Looks to me a stronger league this season and though i feel were only 1 or 2 players short of challenging the top teams i also reckon were only 1or 2 players above the bottom lot and were missing them at the moment,

Think when we get Arteta and Pienaar back fully fit (i wouldnt rush them personally) we'll have 1 of the best attacking midfields, its then for Moyes to make everyone gel which will be interesting!!

All we have done and are doing is treading water. With a full squad or even a 90% fit squad then Moyes will have the option to cater a side specifically targetting the weaknesses of whichever opposing side we are facing. In terms of where we finish, it will come down to the so called six pointers, the usual suspects of Spurs and Villa have this season been joined by Sunderland and City, it will be these eight games that will hold the major influence on our season finishing place. Of the four, we have faced and drawn with Villa. Granted they have already played and beat Chelsea and Liverpool so lets hope they continue to upset the press by beating the darling sides whilst falling apart against the Wolves and Wigans of the league. Same situation for Spurs, the loss to Stoke has highlighted how inept in defence they are and a side like Stoke (see also Villa and Wigan) where crosses are delivered and a physical aerial game is key they will fall to pieces. City have drawn the last three or four. Lets see how Sunderland cope with Bent not on scorching form and Jones suspended. (Sunderland have a decent to good first eleven, but beneath that they are wobbly)
Our ten games have not been great, but considering the long term injuries to the spine of the first team (Jags, Arteta, Yak) with the added withdrawl of Captain Neville then it is no wonder we have looked shakey, the remaining players have had to find their feet in terms of managing without the top pro's they have so long relied upon. (Add in the fact that the late signings have had to bed in, the likes of Neill were really unfit, Fellaini has needed surgery, travelling for internationals for Cahill, and a taxing European front to fight on along with the travelling that incurs. Is it any wonder we have struggled by)

H Arsenal loss (last season - draw).............................-1
A Burnley loss (N/A).................................................?
H Wigan win (last season - win).................................same
A Fulham loss (last season - win - first in 40 years?)......-3
H Blackburn win (last season - loss)............................+3
A Portsmouth win (last season - loss)..........................+3
H Stoke draw (last season - win)................................-2
H Wolves draw (N/A)................................................?
A Bolton loss (last season - win).................................-3
H Villa draw (last season - loss)..................................+1
Yes I know stats can prove anything you like, but comparatively speaking, are we scraping by bravely? Are we failing dismally? Are we exceding expectation?

6th place after our start. Look we need points on the board to put clear sky between us and the relegation zone never mind thinking about Europe next year.

I thought after last season's injuries they wouldn't be such a problem this year (foolish I know). But then I watched City develop this summer and Spurs and Villa carry on buying big and thought, well the league will be bloody hard anyway. Now, as this football article on the Champions League race notes, the battle for 4th really looks open this year, with none of the pretenders really seizing the mantle, but the RS looking unbelievably poor . Yet we get all this bad luck and can't join in the fun. Sod's law!
