Moyes: Scouting vs Mentoring

Player Valuation: £35m
In the midst of all the negativity surrounding silly season, i thought i'd make a positive thread. I was thinking about how most people are saying that if Lescott goes, it will be for atleast 22 million pounds, when we originally bought him for about 5 million. Just in the last couple years alone, Tim Howard (3 million), Phil Jagielka (4 million), and pienaar (3 million ?) along with lescott have atleast tripled, if not quadrupled in value. I would venture to say that Baines has almost doubled in value (6 million purchase), and yakubu has largely held his value despite a relatively high transfer price.

this isn't even including the players like cahill (1.5 million!!!), arteta (2 million!!) signed previously who's values have skyrocketed astronomically, while players like neville and yobo have significantly gone up in value as well imo.

anyways, my question is, do you think we can attribute these huge improvements to excellent scouting and an eye for talent, or is the success of these players due to moyes (and the rest of our coaching staff's) tutulage. Players like jagielka, baines, neville, and to an extent howard were already somewhat established, but jags didn't really find success until he moved positions, and howard has been pretty much a new keeper since he came to us with none of those shocking errors that plagued his manchester career.

the answer may lie somewhere in between, but i'm interested in seeing peoples thoughts on whether these players were gems that had yet to blossom, or whether they legitimately benefited from moyes and may not have been as successful if they had moved to other clubs instead.

*all player prices are from wikipedia so they may not be accurate

You cant underestimate how much discipline is the source of their added value. That should be a given with anyone earning a massive wedge as a professional, but it doen't always follow. That's Moyes biggest contribution to the club by a country mile. I think there's a whole strata of footballers out there in the cost bracket you identified who can get you right up near the top of the Premier League as long as all are willing to fit in and surrender themselves to the system.

A lot of our players have been highly rated at some point. We have just called at the right time, Moyes has picked them up and as Dave says installed a bit of discipline and team spirit, it goes a long, long way.

The man is a God to be honest. We are screwed when the day comes hes had enough of shopping in Netto, football wise of course, I cant imagine somebody on 70k a week shopping at Netto, not that I ever have of course either. *cough*

Both really, a mixture of an eye for a player and top coaching - see Jagelieka Phil, i think the environment and atmosphere within the club has a lot to do with it to.

We will see it again this season, Cory Annoux will be the American Rooney
