“Lots of people said when I arrived that I wouldn’t be able to turn Everton around and that drove me on. My inspiration was to prove them wrong. I started this season thinking this was my best ever chance – even better than the year we qualified – to get into the top four, so you can imagine how disappointed I feel. I thought this was the one. I now have to change and make sure I get a team that goes back to showing we have a bit of fire in our belly.

I made a change this year in my approach,” he says. “I am always a bit cautious so most years I would say let’s get the points to be safe from relegation and we move on from there. That wasn’t my start this year. My start this year was nothing like that. It was to say we are aiming to finish in the top six. I had changed and I wanted that to get to the players and come out through the supporters. “I wanted not to get off to a bad start, so I tried to change everything to avoid that. Maybe I should have just said to get the points to avoid relegation.

“It’s tough at lots of times. I have a really good group of players, good players, and they are due to show. They all think it as well, I think it, so come on then. You might miss chances, but you keep making them, but what you don’t do is lose. Eventually that happens and you get deflated but you have to keep going, keep doing what you believe in and your fortunes will change. I want them to show it’s hurting them as much as it’s hurting me. They have a great spirit and part of that comes from winning, but also from the types of players you have in the group, and they know the manager’s not happy so we will need to see where we go.”

My first quip would have been, you've not blamed Kenwright :P:P

Taking that aside, I've always believed that one of the things the players needed to get out of their heads is the under dog, punching above our head psychology, and move to a more winning mentality. It brings great rewards, but it piles on the weight of expectation on the players - and I think that this is one of the reasons for our ropey season so far.

Moyes has done what every ambitious fan wants us to do, set our sights high, but I'm not sure that psychologically if our players are up for it.

He's never very coherent. Those comments above are ambiguous. Is he blaming himself getting to 'ambitious' or the players for not making the 'great leap forward' with him? Always more questions than answers.

I take it from that interview he sees us now as, first and foremost, strugglers against relegation again, rather than the greatest squad of players assembled since the 80s?

Or owning up to having egg on his face, hes just feeling the frustration we are, ace players not getting results we're all scratching our heads!

Here's what puzzles me from that interview: he states that he should have gone as per usual to secure enough points to avoid relegation rather than ask his players to strive for top 6. Why cant the two objectives co-exist? Seems an odd explanation to me.

I think he is senseing the utter frustration and disapointment of the fans to be honest, there has been more one boo in recent home games. I dont think our season is cut a drift yet and 6th is entirely possible, i think this is management of fans expectations and trying to take a little of the pressure of the players to be honest.

I think you're wrong about 6th place. No chance, imo. I think you're right about management of expectations: this is the official dumbing down of what the season's possibilities now are. It draws a line under unwise talk about top place finishes and refocusses everyone to a more moderate season.

That comes directly from Moyes. In fact it's his bread and butter, the secret to his managerial success at Everton. And it is also the reason he'd be an abject failure at a club like Manchester Utd, as you can't pull the same "The People's Club", Braveheart-like rallying cry from the underdog with them.

Tactically, Moyes is one of, if not the most naive managers in the Premier League. It's precisely because Moyes has felt that we ARE good enough to challenge the top four that we're actually struggling now.

David Moyes - great motivator, w*nk tactician.

You're assuming that.

Remember he's being quoted by a journalist. Who could have selectively quoted him that way.

You do alot of assuming Davek.

In my view, he's lost the ability to motivate a goodish group of players who have seen that the Club lacks the means to achieve its ambitions.

No shame in that.

If you believe the players are ace / superstars / legends, I can understand you must be very disappointed.
