Allardyce Out
... he doesn't start Vellios.

David Moyes has warned against throwing teenage striker Apostolos Vellios into the deep end, despite Everton's lack of goals.

The 19-year-old has been used mainly as an impact substitute since his switch from Iraklis, and has two goals from his six appearances from the bench.

But with the team struggling for goals, and Vellios still adjusting to life in the Premier League, the Everton chief is reluctant to place too much strain on his young shoulders.

Moyes, though, admits the Greek may have done enough in training and games to earn a starting berth.

Possibility

"He has got a possibility - he has scored goals and we are lacking goals at this moment in time," he said ahead of Sunday's game at Fulham.
"In short bursts, he has done very well. But he is young and it would be asking a lot at the moment.

"We see him every day in training and we can see what he is capable of and what he is not.

"He is certainly getting closer, because we need to get some goalscorers in the team.

"Tolos has come on and got us a couple of goals off the bench, but that might just be the best way for him until he gets a little bit more experienced and a little bit more used to it."

The inclusion of the Greek Under 21 international has helped to keep the rest of the forwards on their toes.

And Moyes believes the time has long since passed when players were guaranteed a place in his Toffees starting line-up.

"We've got competition," Moyes added. "We've got John Heitinga not in the side at the moment because of Sylvain (Distin) and (Phil) Jagielka - we have people who are quite capable of coming in.

"We all want that and I'd like more competition in other areas."

The highlighted line shows the contradiction here. If a player is performing, he should play. Saha isn't, Vellios is. No brainer.

We're not playing Barcelona. If he doesn't start Vellios tomorrow then I honestly believe he has lost the plot; it sends out a very, very bad message, which is no matter what you do when given the chance, I'm sticking with the status quo.

Vellios has only performed in bursts of about 10-15 minutes. It is a much bigger step than people realise to start a game in the premier league. That being said I would like him to start...

And what does he do if it fails miserably? Lets Moyes do his thing, and Velios will pick himself if he's really that good.

More Cahill should be dropped than Saha to be fair. Cahills got zero goal threat at the moment

This. Saha hasn't been that bad since he's been back. He's made a fair amount of clever runs and has held up the ball well. I would drop Cahill for Vellios right now.

He wouldn't though, Cahill is second behind saha so either player has to be injured for him to start.

Moyes has a point about vellios and barkley being eased in etc....BUT we don't really have options and need some spark, something new and fresh so those players can offer it

At the moment, Cahill, jags, and Coleman are off form and have been for weeks...if competition is there, they should be dropped

Vellios isnt gonna start, I'd prepare yourself for that one. But if Drenthe doesnt start, then Moyes really needs to locate his balls. Jags should be dropped aswell, but I've given up even talking about that anymore.

Moist (love that name, it was in another thread somewhere) won't drop Jags. But maybe he'll bring Jonny in and playy 4 4 2, with Jags and Neville up front.

I agree Tubey , hope he starts with Vellios and Saha , I'd drop Seamus back to right back and bring Drenthe in too but there's no way he'd do that , I would have Barkley in the team too but knowing he won't I at least hope he makes the bench this week , i fancy us 2morrow for some reason , gut instinct

It's going to be very frustrating if Drenthe is left on the bench again. I don't mind Vellios being used from the bench for the time being at his age, it may be the most effective way to utilise him for the time being.

Liverpool could have bought Apostolos Vellios 700 times for the money they spent on Andy Carroll :D.

Why did you feel the need to put "if" in the thread title?

Moyes always goes on about not rushing players in to the team until they have experience, but how are they supposed to get any real experience if they never get a chance to start?

I think experience is overated considering how our experienced players keep on losing, conceding goals and looking about as dangerous as a blind granny with dementia.

So what if Velios plays and doesn't do well? Maybe he'll learn he needs to keep on working to improve his game. Sitting on the bench isn't going to help him learn quicker or teach him that he needs to improve his game, if that's the case and tbh it's not like he can do any worse than the 'experienced' players Moyes has been picking.

Get Velios, Drenthe and Straq in the team and lets see what they can do. We've nothing to lose and everything to gain.

It won't happen, as Moyes is gutless. He plays defensive, predictable, boring football that keeps us just above the rest of the pack but inhibits us from ever even trying to compete with the better teams.

You were going well until those two points mate.

Moyes is cautious because it's how he's kept us afloat. We have EVERYTHING to lose if we get into a relegation fight. He'll remember the Kroldrups of the world, because he knows EXACTLY what it's like to field a player who is not up to the standards he has set.

If Moyes doesn't think a player is quite ready why risk them becoming a laughing stock with a couple of bad games before they make good? BECAUSE THIS LEAGUE IS PUNISHING FOR MISTAKES.

He doesn't trust them to do the job. Simples.

How many times you want to rely on an unproven talent before it gets you fired?

People don;t get the fine balances of the game. You win and look sh!te one week, then you look a million bucks and lose the next week.

Moyes wants to stick with the basics, then, and only then, when we are doing the simple things right will he throw an X-Factor into the mix. It always comes back to the same argument, but Moyes will always do what his instincts tell him.

This League is too fast to try anything stupid, as you would have us do week in week out.
