Moyes' Felli Disappointment – News Archive – News – evertonfc.com - The Official Website of Everton Football Club

David Moyes was disappointed that Marouane Fellaini received his tenth booking of the season in the 2-0 victory over Hull.
Fellaini and Mikel Arteta had given the Blues the lead by half-time before the Belgian was cautioned moments after.
Moyes was pleased with both goals, but was disappointed with the referee’s decision, which now means the Club’s record signing will miss the forthcoming games against Liverpool.
The Goodison chief said: “The important thing was to get three points today – we knew there was a decision to make at half-time with whether to bring Felli (Marouane Fellaini) off or not and I thought that we were a couple of goals up against Newcastle at half-time earlier in the season and we didn’t secure that lead, so I thought that the important thing was to get the three points today.
“I think if we got 10 or 15 more minutes into the match, I would have brought him off. The important thing was that the referee made that decision.
“I think the player ducked his head to win the ball, Felli is only looking at the ball and actually pokes the ball away before the other player’s head gets there, but he gives a free kick. It wasn’t a free kick.
“The ref’s claiming that he’s booked him for persistent fouling but I’ve looked at a few other ones and they were really harsh on the boy. The one where the goalkeeper comes and he’s claiming a foul by Felli on the goalkeeper, but I think it was the other way round.
“If you talk them all up it seems like there was a lot of fouls, but they’re actually mistakes by the referee.”
That booking aside, Moyes was keen to praise his side for their recent performances – singling out the defence, who became the first team to manage to stop Hull scoring away from home this season.
“I think we’ve been defending well,” said the Blues boss. “The goalkeeper, and the boys at the back. I thought there were some good things to come out of our performance.
“In truth I don’t think Tim Howard had too much to do other than make a few catches and I thought in the main we controlled the game.”

Wasn't the Newcastle game 2-1 at HT? not 2-0?

Agree with his comments about Fellaini but for me, I would like him to expect his side to hold a 2-0 lead at home... rather than be concerned due to the past odd experience. C'mon Moyes, bit more confidence ay?

It was 2-1, with Newcastle scoring just before the half time whistle. And I agree with your point, Moyes should be bold enough to hold his nerve against teams like Hull at home. Perhaps if we had been playing any of the top four, Moyes' argument might well have been solid.

Pretty poor from Moyes that. He cant hide behind the referee's decision, it was his own non-decision which was to blame. And yes, it was a just a one goal lead against Newcastle, which sort of underlines how much Moyes is reaching here for an excuse.

Moyes does have a tendency to offer excuses for his own failings. I wish he could be more honest under these circumstances, as that might make a very good manager into an excellent one.

To be fair, Neb, I hear him lots of times taking the blame for his own players poor performances, and I dont think he generally hides from responsibility. But that interview above is a clear excuse for an embarrassing balls up by a manager getting mega bucks to make those decisions.

He just got a major decision wrong.

to be honest i was angry at moyses decission during the match, but thinking about it i am not sure if we would beat liverpool with him, so having him for arsenal at home (a game i think we have more chance of winning)is a better option.

Spot on mate. He'd be missing for two of the next four games for sure, I'd like him for the derbies but he will make a difference against Arsenal, we could do them.

I do think he often throws around blame to other quarters. I also think that often he says things to the media that are designed to make himself look good, honest and forthright.

He's been a great manager, and I do like him. I just feel he sometimes likes to look for excuses for his own personal failings.

We were comfortably 2.0 up at half time. the match ended 2.0.

That to me says that whatever we had going in the first half Hull were dealing with in the second.

Not taking Fellaini off at half time was a risk that didn't pay off twice.
He was booked and we failed to add to our lead.

The only circumstances under which it would have been sensible to keep him on is if we had used all our substitutes. But we hadn't used any, and there wasn't anyone on the bench who couldn't have done a job had they come on in Phil-Lynini's place and allowed for a bit of shuffling round. It's not as if the defence was showing signs of creaking.
The shake up might even have brought us a few more goals.
